The Elusive Man and Mistakes: A Short Film Review

Directors/writers: Marc Roussel and Mark Sanders.

The Elusive Man is a co-creation from Marc Roussel (Remote) and Mark Sanders (40 Years Younger), which will have run at the Action on Film Int' Film Festival Sunday, July 25th. The film is more comedy than anything else as larger than life characters return from the '40s for wild bemusement (confusion). The result is a hit and miss short of sixteen minutes, with "the culturally devoid" Toronto, likely, the film's backdrop (Elusive).

The film starts off with a loveless marriage involving a mature man, of wealth, with a more beautiful, scheming vixen. A continuity error occurs quickly with the wife's position on the bed changing. However, the action moves ahead quickly with character Blaine (George Komorowski), the husband, getting mugged in his own office. Soon, ears are chopped off, a wife announces her cheating ways, and Blaine is threatened with castration all for the want of a sixty year old, miniaturizing painting.

The story is unbelievable and the comedy did not connect with this reviewer. Every person has differing sense of humour, from dark comedy, to sarcasm and even to satire. So, because The Elusive Man did not reach this person does not mean that the comedy will not coax some laughs out of you. However, the characters in the film are mostly unlikeable, with Blaine the exception. Each eccentric person is backstabbing the other with the treachery reaching murderous lows. The viewer has no chance other than to root for the dumbfounded Blaine.

This film will be shown in Pasadena in less than a week and already the film has been nominated for Best Editing, while directors Marc Roussel and Mark Sanders have been nominated for Best Direction. The show is worth a watch if you like the silly and a little gore thrown in. If you are looking for laugh out loud funny you might want to wait until Roussel and Sanders tighten their comedic delivery in future productions.

Overall: 6 (-1 for a continuity error, -1 for despicable characters, -1 for comedic delivery and -1 for not incorporating more scenes of Veronika London).

*As a note the director has addressed the continuity error: "we jumped the axis. She's in the same position, we just crossed the camera axis" (Roussel) One article on the topic has suggested that this can disorient the viewer and that was this reviewer's impression, but this is a valid directing technique.
