A Dark Shadow Emerges in July: A Blu-ray Horror Pack Review

*full disclosure: a July Blu-ray pack was provided for review.

Horror Pack continues to ship original copies of DVDs and Blu-rays, through their subscription service. They send out several packages every month. Customers can sign up for one month packs. Or, if they want to save money over the long run, they can sign up for twelve month subscriptions. Each pack is picked by a group of horror filmmakers and subscribers. And, the packs change from month to month. July was a good month, for subscribers. For Blu-ray fans, there was one unique release, a re-release and two other interesting copies. This subscription service should not be missed.

Much of what Horror Pack is has been described above. However, there are a few other details worth mentioning. The subscription services usually run between $20-$25 (US), plus a reasonable shipping fee. There are promotional codes, out there, that will bring down the costs further. The packs arrive early in the next month. This July pack arrived on August 1st. So, there is very little wait time, once orders have been completed. Orders can be mailed internationally. And, the there are a lot of options for buyers, on the Horror Pack website.

All four Blu-rays were new to this recipient. This film fan was not aware that IFC Midnight had released Babadook on Blu-ray. This latest release hosts a few extras, including interviews and behind-the-scenes clips. The film is also released in a Widescreen version. Also, Outpost: Rise of the Spetsnaz is a hard film to track down, on Blu-ray. At the time of writing this article, this version of the film was sold out on Amazon. An XLRator Media launch, this version is unrated, with no obvious extras. The third item was Invasion of the Body Snatchers. This is the Philip Kaufman version, from 1978. This release contained a few special features, including three behind-the-scenes clips and a special effects featurette. But, the highlight of July, for this collector, was Alex Drummond's Killer Party. This title is only available through Video-on-demand streaming services. From a quick search, a Blu-ray version of this title is not available in North America. Finally, the cover for Killer Party is unique to Horror Pack subscribers. This four pack Blu-ray mail out was a welcome surprise.

This horror subscription service continues to exceed expectations. The content in each pack often contains one unique item. The previous month's pack has been reviewed here: A June Horror Pack Review and it included a signed copy of The Scarehouse. This time the unique item was Killer Party and its never released Blu-ray cover. This service is great for collectors of home entertainment releases. The contents are consistently worth more than the subscription fee. With a quick look, this pack was worth close to $100 (Cdn). Though, one item had its wrapping slightly torn, because of shipping. Still, the disc and cover were in perfect condition. Also, 20th Century Fox continues to make re-sales of their items very difficult. The proof-of-purchase sticker was covered up on the Invasion of the Body Snatchers' copy. Still, there is a lot to like about Horror Pack and their July pack.

Horror Pack continues to bring horror fans what they want - quality horror films! The packs are reasonably priced and full of unique content, or rare content. Some of their releases include original artwork; this is a plus. This horror film collector recommends the service. Though, this reviewer can only compare Horror Pack to Box of Dread. Box of Dread is more toy and comic focused, less movie focused. With the competition aside, Horror Pack should be tried out by horror fans, if you are looking to build your home entertainment collections. You will feel haunted if you do not try it at least once!
