The Apparition Awaits in this Trailer: Early Impressions

Director/writer: Todd Lincoln.

Cast: Ashley Greene, Sebastian Stan and Tom Felton.

Long time fans of horror may recall that in The Entity (1981), a group of parapsychologists was trying to capture a demonic spirit in a laboratory. But when it escapes, the anger this creature exacted on its original prey could have turned anyone into a raving lunatic.

Perhaps, in the coming film, The Apparition, the insanity will be kicked up a notch. In the trailer that was released, the power that spirits manifest may well open doors to a world that human kind is not meant to look at, much less understand.

These self-titled films can be amusing at times, since it sets up a few expectations before going to the theatre. In a movie that stars Ashley Green (Twilight), Sebastian Stan (Captain America) and Tom Felton (Harry Potter), a certain formula can be recognized. And these university researchers are out to test the adage that all any spirit requires to become real is the power of belief.

This product has a great concept as its core. The power of religion depends on the numbers of true believers so it can continue to be an influence.

But as for how far the tale will go versus the common jump-scares needs an advance screening. With producer/director/writer Todd Lincoln being a newcomer to the scene, a lot of hope will be riding in how well he can create a suspension of disbelief.

The trailer looks appetizing since it appears to be mixing up elements from The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity and Insidious. Strangely though, this film is set to arrive late in the summer, two months before the Halloween season. Maybe the marketing department does not know when this film should be released. The timing is at least right to welcome the student crowd before class is back in session, where other terrors sometimes await.
