"Death Valley" and Saying Hello To Mickey Rourke with a Greasy Tire: A Television Review ("The Hottest Day of the Year")

Creator: Curtis Gwinn.

Director: Austin Reading.

Writers: Mike Alber and Gabe Snyder.

MTV pushes along with their comedy series "Death Valley." In Epis. 6, "The Hottest Day of the Year," there are again three stories, two of which involve zombies. The other story follows Officer Kristen to a vampire turning party. The laughs return as a Mickey Rourke look-a-like is run over several times and the silly jokes seem to bring out the most laughs. This episode has lots of humour in this short twenty minute episode.

John-John (Texas Battle) and Carla (Tania Raymonde) are now being shadowed by an internal affairs officer after the killing of a senior citizen. The new policy called "PUS" puts the protocol into zombie bashing unnecessarily. This leads to the policymaker's death. At the same time, in front of the officer's location, Billy (Bryce Johnson) and Joe (Charlie Sanders) also take on some of the undead via their patrol car. A Mickey Rourke imposter gets ridden over several times until the tire gets stuck in zombie guts. Kirsten is also in a tense situation when she is recruited by the captain to follow his niece to a turning party. Things take a turn for the worse when the head vampire decides that Kirsten will be the next to turn into a vampire.

The inane jokes are what makes this show so funny. You would think that the writers would not go there, but they do. Captain Dashell (Bryan Callen) rubs down Joe inappropriately as he gets his officers psyched for the day's assignments. Earlier, a zombie explodes on Billy and it is the slapstick, over-the-top style of humour that gets this reviewer. The show ends with a little bit of drama, but this is more comedy than anything else.

Epis. 7, "Who, What, When, Werewolf...Why" will bring the Werewolf into the show and to the San Bernadino Valley, which recently was shown on MTV (Oct. 17th). "Death Valley" is running through the different horror characters, with zombies often in each episode. Also, this show is for fans of both comedy and horror, with some of the season's shows funnier than others. "Do you have the right tube tops, belly rings and short shorts for the assignment?" Lines like this are surely never spoken in a police department and that is what makes them shine.

Overall: 7 out of 10 (one of the funnier episodes, with some violence).
