"Death Valley" and Celebrating Birthdays with Stolen Goods: A Television Review ("Who, What, When, Werewolf...Why")

Creator: Curtis Gwinn.

Director: Jordan Vogt-Roberts.

Writer: Jennifer Rice-Genzuk Henry.

The most recent episode of "Death Valley" shown on MTV is "Who, What, When, Werewolf...Why." In this showing, writer Jennifer Rice-Genzuk Henry uses the three story structure again to tell a tale of a werewolf, a vampire and a zombie. John-John (Texas Battle) and Carla (Tania Raymonde) are again on zombie patrol and this time they have to dispose of their own bodies. Kirsten (Caity Lotz) dates a werewolf and Joe (Charlie Sanders) faces a foe from the past. The comedy was mostly lacking in this episode; instead, there are a few more thrills in this short, twenty minute episode.

Kirsten's BFF turns out to be an unregistered werewolf and really the scruffy beard and poofy hair should have given him away. Not to worry, Joe comes to her rescue. As well, this episode celebrates Carla's birthday and John-John has a strange ritual for gift giving. He loots corpses; but Carla is on to him. And sometimes that corpse will not go down so easily! The third story follows the Captain (Bryan Callen) and Billy (Bryce Johnson) as they dish out some justice on a cop beating vampire. His trip to the tanning bed is a fatal one.

The only comedy tidbits involved in this show were the still awkward dialogue from the Captain and his focus on homoeroticism: "Billy...your mouth is like a sliced peach." Awkward! Again, characters do not know how to react to the Captain's inappropriate dialogue and most seem to just ignore him. There was a short bit between Joe and Kirsten's new boyfriend, but the witty dialogue did not generate any laughs from this critic. This was mainly an episode of horror with the werewolf introduced for the first time. And with the body count climbing and more and more characters showing themselves to have supernatural origins, it is a surprise that half of Van Nuys is not a shambler, vampire or hairy beast by now.

Most horror fans will enjoy this episode, as these Keystone Kops continue to stumble into unbelievable situations and scenarios. The next episode, "Zombie or Crack Addict?" debuts this Tuesday (Oct. 18th) and hopefully, there will be a few more laughs in this showing. The slapstick and silly humour is what really makes this show go and there was very little of either seen here.

Overall: 6.5 out of 10 (could have been better).
