AM1200 Tunes Out Other Radio Stations: A Movie Review

Director/writer: David Prior.

David Prior has come up with something marvelous in the fourty minute short AM1200. The film is shot in high quality digital and the audio comes through in crystal clear Dolby SR. This is a film that energizes the senses, while delivering a tense, quickly unraveling tale of a man alone on a highway. But, is he totally alone? The movie website Quiet Earth says of AM1200: "if AM1200 gets transmitted by a festival near you, I recommend you tune in." This review will second that notion, emphatically.

The writing is not a simple connect the dots plotline. Instead character Sam Larson (Eric Lange) embezzles from his own devious boss (Ray Wise), who then executes himself. Sam takes his withdrawal on the run, likely to Bermuda, before intercepting a strange call for help from the local radio station (AM1200). Here is a tip if you are in a horror movie. Do not answer calls of distress. Plus, the ending will be unexpected and non-linear.

AM1200 is currently at the Nevermore Film Festival, which begins tonight and the film looks like a very high budget project, despite being independent. The sound of birds and insects is sharp, as are the often dark visuals. Filmmaker David Prior really took the time to make sure every detail was shot, or recorded in high quality. The film simply looks, sounds, and feels great.

This is Prior's first feature unto his own that is not a documentary and if his first film is this good then expect to see full length features from this director in the near future. As well, the film's tone is basically horrifying, tense, or a combination of the two. Prior is a natural for this genre and here is one strong vote for further productions.

Those interested in horror, suspense, or thrillers will have to venture to their local film festival to see AM1200. The film is not available for purchase, yet. However, the DVD details are in and the film will include Prior's commentary, an alternate ending, a visual effects montage, a still gallery, and others. Put AM1200 on your to see list, as this is the highest rated short on this site to date.

Setting/realism/surrealism: 9.
Plot/story/subject: 9.
Directing/staging/style: 9.

Overall: 9 re-watches out of 10.
