Sci-fi Thriller Freaks Shows One Man Struggling in a Totalitarian State: First Trailer

Tagline: "They Look Just Like Us."

Freaks is the first feature from directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein. Already having shown at several film Festivals including the Newport Beach Film Festival, Freaks is a genre-bender. The film molds part of a family movie with sci-fi and mystery elements. Set to be released by Well Go USA later this year, Freaks centrally stars: Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild), Bruce Dern (The Hateful Eight) and Grace Park. A trailer has just been released for this intriguing film, which is slated for a Summer theatrical run.

The directors have talked about the film a number of times. At MovieRamblings, they mention how the script came about: "we imagined Emile’s character as a father who never had the benefit of that support network. Before the start of the film, his character had been an outcast and a criminal, on the run for most of his life." Without that support, the character simply known as Dad, is stuck in his house as paranoia takes over his life. Director Stein also mentions the current, socio-political environment influencing the film: "the social commentary in the film is inspired by discrimination and violence in our world, where the tools of government can be used to destroy the lives of people who are considered Other." There really is no escaping the government as shown in the film's official trailer.

Well Go USA will show Freaks, in theatres, this August 23rd. Showing across the U.S., more markets are sure to announce their release dates, shortly. For now, fans of sci-fi or of thrillers can view the film's mysterious trailer below, with more details to come.
