Two Mysteries Revealed in "Falling Skies:" A Television Review ("The Pickett Line")

Director: Sergio Mimica-Gezzan.

Writers: Robert Rodat, Heather V. Regnier and Jordan Rosenberg.

Epis. 7 of Seas. 3 on "Falling Skies" was titled "The Pickett Line." In this episode, there were a few reveals and lots of conflict. The Mason family seems to have bitten off more than they can chew as they tangle with a family of bandits and the local Overlords. Another plot reveal showed who the spy was in Charleston. And, Pope (Colin Cunningham) continues to aggravate almost everyone around him. "The Pickett Line" was hit and miss with the drama, but full of compelling action.

The show began with the Masons on the road. They are heading to Mechanicsville, in search of Tom's (Noah Wyle) wife, Anne (Moon Bloodgood), and their alien baby. Their journey is interrupted by a group of bandits, who rob them at gunpoint. The next few scenes involve Tom and the Pickett family wrestling for control of an isolated farm. Meanwhile, back at Charleston, Pope is sabotaging vehicles, refusing to fight and intimidating Maggie (Sarah Carter). Does Pope have any friends, at all? Also back at Charleston, the President of the United States returns to this city, briefly. He is killed in his hospital bed by Lourdes (Seychelle Gabriel), the latest Overlord assassin. This episode was building the tension for the finale effectively.

Pope continues to act as the go-to malcontent. This time, Pope and Weaver (Will Patton) are having a falling out over the location of Pope's man cave. Pope does not want it moved and he no longer wants to fight for the resistance. Pope sabotages several military vehicles, while plotting his next misadventure. How is Pope helping Charleston? Hopefully, the Volm will put Pope in their cannon in and fire him out into space, in an upcoming episode.

The Volm weapon and its disadvantages were revealed in this short episode. This energy weapon will likely eradicate life on Earth in three months, if the fighters are lucky. If they are unlucky, the Earth will be irradiated and destroyed instantly, if the Volm technology is ineffective. However, the few survivors on Earth need the Volm, if they are ever to overthrow the Overlords.

One other reveal, involving Lourdes, came about in a surprising fashion within "The Pickett Line." Lourdes is another spy for the Espeni. Fans of the show might remember her being infected in the middle of Seas. 2. Well into Seas. 3, Lourdes is killing officials left right and center in Charleston. Who is next? This viewer is expecting Lourdes to be outed as the mole in the Seas. 3 finale, which is only three episodes away.

"The Pickett Line" was an exciting episode, with only a few dramatic elements hampering the flow of Epis. 7. Pope continues to antagonize everyone around him, while his actions are rarely kept in check. The Masons continue to wander around outside Charleston and it will be curious to see if Tom is reunited with Anne, before the season ends. The Volm weapon is getting ready to be used and this sci-fi fan is anticipating an explosive season finale.

Overall: 7.5 out of 10 (does Pope get on anyone else's nerves?, the ending was a solid cliffhanger).
