Matthew Gunnoe's Creeper in Production and "Contempt" to Debut Soon!

Indie filmmaker Matthew Gunnoe has two new projects in the works, Creeper and Contempt. The former will be marketed and the latter slated for the web. While one-word movie titles make for an easy attention-grabber, to generate interest hinges on catching audiences with a cool poster design. With these two new projects, some movie enthusiasts may well wonder how the ideas came to be?

“Creeper came about when I was trying to think of a project that had never been done before,” answered Gunnoe. “Unbelievably, no one has done a film about the dangers of social sites, at least not in any of my research.”

The film focuses on three spoiled girlfriends that are fed up with being harassed by perverts on social networking websites and they decide to go on the offensive. This director reveals a few telling plot details: “After many attempts at finding someone to victimize at random, the girls hit pay dirt and have some devilish fun with a lonely half-wit on the popular social site called ConnectMeNet.”

“However, things get out of hand,” continued Gunnoe. “The girls cruelly have their victim do increasingly humiliating things for their amusement, recording every demeaning act all the while. After they have their fun, they heartlessly post their collage in a clip on the net titled ‘Revenge on a Creeper.’”

“What happens next forces the girls into a nightmarish fight for their lives! The film stars Darryl Baldwin in the lead, Rohnja Morrow, Brittany Cardella and Amber Sym.”

With Gunnoe’s filmmaking operation using the landscape of the American South-west, filled with humid subtropical flora and fauna, he can have fun with the movie’s starlets and tease viewers to the problems that he sometimes faces when using an outdoors setting. Sometimes, the victims (or the heroes) have to tackle adversity in more than just Mother Nature can dole out, but also in human nature as well.

But there are other mysteries too. The Appalachian Mountains stretch throughout most of the North American east coast and there is many a legend tied to the land. This director believes these backdrops are ideal because they provide a desolate setting that fits perfectly for these themes he likes to explore in his films.

In the web-series, "Contempt," this setting is perfect. In the teaser trailer, a dry grassy plain is the ideal place to unceremoniously leave a hardened prisoner like Raul Castillo. If a dessert is easy to eradicate all traces, to tease a roughian with the possibility of survival is even more difficult. Castillo’s only contact to the civilized world is with an iPhone.

And the concept looks like it can fare well against Predators, the sci-fi film that looks at the question of who are the real killers and what exactly becomes prey. But what is "Contempt" going to be about?

"In the poster, the skull represents the punished, the knife and its utilization reflect the brutality of swift justice, the scale represents justice served and the character Death, holding all of this is the one who carries it out" answered this filmmaker.

But for the curious, is this film going to be called, Saw meets Hunger Games?

“'Contempt' is dealing with actual criminals that have skirted justice,” replied Gunnoe. “Have no doubt, he [the person on the phone] wants them to die a brutal death. The only reason they have a chance to survive is because there is being no honor in slaughter. This is a strict code of conduct he adheres to. The only time he kills someone outright is if they refuse to participate in a task. The only comparison to the Hunger Games is that they are in a woodsy setting.”

“And I think bringing crooked authorities to justice is pretty unique,” continued Gunnoe. “I decided to have a brainstorm session with Mike and a couple of other friends: Rohnja Morrow and Kyle Fritsche about the different kinds of suffering we can put the scumbags through for the first two episodes. Let me tell you, we came up with some zingers!”

When asked about what people will see, Gunnoe talks about two set-ups: “one of them will be a game of ‘chop blackjack.’ In this scenario, the participant must win three hands of Blackjack. For each game he loses, he must chop off a finger. Another instrument of torture is an evil wife – yes, an evil wife! This one is interesting, because she is an accomplice and used to make the subject miserable. However, this one doesn’t turn out the way you would plan.”

In the territory of producing free work for the internet, everything does hinge on the support of fans such as web advertising dollars and the clicks to keep some websites running. Only a few episodes have been made and they are in post-production. The rest will require the feedback from supporters of Gunnoe’s works.

“The biggest challenge is money. Because there is no guarantee of return on investment, I’ve put enough into it for the first couple of episodes. After that and if it is popular, the viewers will decide. I’ll be launching a Kickstarter page for the next couple of episodes.”

While one movie has the potential to be sold to a cable network, the other has to face the ever-expanding sea known as the World Wide Web, which some liken to free internet TV. At lest Gunnoe is always up to a challenge to explore new frontiers.
