CW’s "Supernatural" is Going to the Circus with “Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie:" A Television Review

Director: Mike Rohl.

Writers: Andrew Dabb and Daniel Loflin.

The clock, as well as this season, is running haywire in "Supernatural’s" latest episode, "Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie." Here, Sam and Dean have to deal with some strange magic where half the story is told in flashback. The jumping around is fine as a narrative structure, and if that is supposed to mean something, not many viewers will think it’s related to the fact that the Winchesters are still a fixed point in time even when they are miles apart.

With this episode, Sam has to face his darkest fear alone. Dean has to contend with a silent avenger—with his own set of problems—who may be lurking about in Plucky’s, a Chuck E. Cheese-style entertainment parlor.

With this episode, the emphasis is more about character development than the lackluster comedy. The brothers are obviously being prepped for the grand finale. The focus here is mostly with childhood phobias from not only the children visiting the pizza parlor, but also in what the Winchester brothers experienced in their youth.

Dean sees a bit of himself in Tyler (Jakob Davies), a boy who spends more time at Plucky’s than any other child because of his mom. Her hectic lifestyle does not help Tyler any.

Also, Dean inadvertently caused Sam’s fear of clowns. He gets apologetic afterwards, and although Sam seems to be finally over it, just what that entails for the later episodes remains to be seen. For Dean, he almost lost Sam (again). Those issues are still not resolved.

The next episode, “Repo Man,” shows that the brothers are indeed revisiting their past. In the official summary of the episode, they are revealed to be visiting an old client, Nora (Nicole Oliver), and they need the help of Jeffrey (Russell Sams) to see if he remembers anything when he was possessed by the black-eyed demon. If that is not bad enough, Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) finally returns to plague Sam.

Some viewers may have wondered if the Devil was napping. Many episodes have elapsed since his last appearance. Astral projection, even for a caged devil, hallucination or not, must be awfully draining. The Devil needs to keep the Energizer Bunny around.

Overall: 7.5 out of 10.
