Can SEGA's Rise of Nightmares Provoke a Scare? A Videogame Preview

If there is ever time video-gamers wish they could literally run amok with a chainsaw, Rise of Nightmares, by SEGA, may be the game to own. This survival horror video game is receiving mixed reviews due to its motion controller interface. Maybe instead of using the Kinect, players should go back to the tried-and-true, the handheldto perform basic in-character motions, solve puzzles and avoid traps.

While this game may be a first for the Xbox 360 game console and using the Kinect in a game that's not about sports, the problems many reviewers are allegedly complaining about are in how the interface works. From the sounds of many reviews, the controls are not as intuitive or smooth as one would hope. The combat engine needs fine tuning beause the motion-controls are easy to master, but they don't execute as smoothly in the game world as one would hope.

In the game, the lead character in the game is Josh, a simple tourist, who, who loses his wife to a deranged scientist. His monstrous creations come out of nowhere to threaten the virtual avatar. The player has to fight his way out to safety and to find the wife. After minutes of game-play, maybe the only thing that will be chucked out is the game itself. Eurogamer reports that the motion control experience adds very little to the game play. It undeniably enhances the experience, only when it works. Throwing knives and punching faces may seem fun, but just how long can that last?

The graphics are decent, but the narrative is, according to IGN, a worst case scenario come to life. There is no depth or redeeming quality to any of the characters. This game's plot is too simple, and the play value is very short. After about half an hour of game-play with either controllers, the player might be ready to pack the game up than to go gunning for more blood.

Gamers might be better off going back to the movies in this round.
