Supernatural the Animation Receives a Release Date and Reactions!

Fans of CW's Supernatural will soon see the Japanese animated version released to North American shores July 26th, titled "Supernatural the Animation," or "Supernatural: The Anime Series." There will no doubt be pre-screenings at special events like the San Diego Comic Convention and pre-orders are now being accepted at the usual internet retail outlets. This release will contain all 22 episodes.

The MSRP is $49.98 for the DVD and $54.97 for the Blu-Ray. The former will have English, Chinese, Spanish and Thai subtitles, and the latter will include additional languages–German, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish. Based on what members in the anime community are suggesting in various forums, the subtitles may not be a true translation. The spec sheet reveals that it will be close captioned.

And for the internet generation, this series will also be available as video on demand and download.

In this release, both North American stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles will be providing a short introduction for each of the episodes. Padalecki will be providing his voice for all 22 episodes, and Ackles is confirmed for just the final two. Interviews with these stars and show creator, Eric Kripke, and the anime directors Shigeyuki Miya and Atsuko Ishizuka from Madhouse – an animation studio well known for hits like Vampire Hunter D and Monster – will be included.

Other features will include a two-part featurette entitled "The Making of Supernatural: The Anime Series," which will look at the creative process behind turning this series into a Japanese staple.

According to one Japanese source, other supporting, recurring, cast members from the live-action show are rumoured to be lending their voices as well. Perhaps this bonus is being saved for the final episodes–this series does provide the best in what seasons one and two of the live-action series has offered, which includes an appearance of John Winchester.
