CW's Supernatural "Let it Bleed" and the Lovecraftian Connection: A Television Review

Creator: Eric Kripke.

Director: John Showalter.

Writer: Sera Gamble.

The Days of our Lives is perhaps the best way to describe "Supernatural's" two-part finale. Dean Winchester returns to the spotlight in "Let it Bleed." And when Lisa and Ben gets captured by Crowley's minions, it is up to Dean to save the day.

Crowley finally reveals himself, and he now has hostages so he can force the Winchester brothers to back off. He is still interested in opening the gates to Purgatory and taking the souls that are locked up in there. Even a hack author from the past, H. P. Lovecraft, gets involved. Apparently he really was into the black arts in the "Supernatural" universe. And back in March 10th, 1937, he and his occult friends had a party and opened the gates to some otherworldly dimension.

While Bobby explores the Lovecraftian connection, the War in Heaven is still going on, and Castiel tries to forge new alliances. More revelations about what these souls are worth are revealed. They are sources of power that can fuel the weapons and fuels the powers that angels and demons have. In essence, they provide faith and that's what elevates a being of lesser power. The more a being can hold, the more powerful it can become, and this will no doubt foreshadow what is to come in the final episode.

Castiel feels like a bit player throughout this episode. He is trying to fix his past mistakes and prepare for what he will become. In becoming a vaulted saint, he is only going to be more alone than ever. He doesn't have the support of the Winchesters in what he's trying to do. He still values their relationship, and tries to make amends with them too. But it is all for naught when the trust is gone.

Whatever faith existed between the three was shattered when Castiel decided not to tell the brothers everything that is going on. And now they have turned to Balthazar for help, and true to the soap opera formula, allegiances switch and what happens next has to wait.

At least one of this season’s story arc gets resolved with this episode. Dean's relationship with Lisa and Ben sadly comes to an end. It parallels with what is happening with Castiel. Both of them are isolated from those that they hope to love. A Hunter's life is never easy.
