Several films have been announced as participating in this year's Arizona Underground Film Festival including: Snowman's Land, Last Rites of Ransom Pride, Beyond the Grave, The Last Lovercraft: Relic of Cthulhu, Machotaildrop and the notoriously violent A Serbian Film. Each film looks interesting and from a brief look this reviewer is looking forward to the western styled Last Rites the most. The film stars Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, and Scott Speedman. Last Rites centers on a female protagonist attempting to bring her dead lover home with guns and sex appeal ablazing. Have a look at a brief synopsis for each film; then, choose your own favourite and get set to attend the festival September 18th. Tickets are available August 23rd. All the available details are below.

Director: Tomasz Thompson.

"Hapless contract killer Walter has screwed up a hit badly, and he has to leave town FAST. Intent on keeping a very low profile, he agrees to take a job guarding Mr Berger's (a former underworld boss) house, in a remote area of the Carpathian Mountains, with his pal Mickey. Berger's wife Sybille turns up at the house unannounced, and shortly after, is killed in a freak accident. Fearing for their lives Walter and Mickey hide Sybille's body, but it's only a matter of time before Berger discovers his wife's fate, and a fight for survival begins for all parties involved" (Arizona).

Last Rites of Ransom Pride

Director: Tiller Russell.

The synopsis for Last Rites:

"1910: A young woman (Lizzy Caplan) tries to take the body of her murdered lover – outlaw Ransom Pride (Scott Speedman) – back home to Texas for burial… with all guns blazing. Stylishly tipping its Stetson to the likes of Peckinpah, Leone, and Tarantino, and featuring memorable roles from Dwight Yoakam, Kris Kristofferson, Jason Priestley, and shotgun toting Peter Dinklage, this dark, violent western is a sure-fire cult classic in the making" (Arizona).

Machotaildrop

Directors: Corey Adams and Alex Craig.

A synopsis for the film here:

"Machotaildrop is a highly visual and fantastical journey about an amateur skateboarder, Walter Rhum, who realizes his dream of turning pro and riding for the world's greatest skateboard company... Machotaildrop. Set in an anachronistic time and place, Machotaildrop is the greatest skateboard company of its day and the regal and grand sport of skateboarding has been thriving for many generations. Walter's journey serves as a window through which we discover the dark underbelly of what appears at first to be a benign skateboard company" (Arizona).

A Serbian Film

Director: Srdjan Spasojevic.

*So violent not rendered on many quality movie databases e.g. IMDB.

The synopsis for the film:

"Milos is a former porn star who is down on his luck financially. When he receives a call from his long-time movie actress partner, Layla, he welcomes her call. Apparently she's heard that a new film director wants to hire Milos to star in his 'artistically-designed' porn film for a very generous price. He is easily lured form his semi-retirement by the lucrative offer, agreeing to meet the director in an isolated mansion. As the filming progresses, Milo begins to suspect that the director's intentions may be darker than mere pornography. As the film begins to devolve into a horrifically violent production, Milos finds escape may not be an option" (Arizona).
