A Not Entirely Uninhabited Island Awakens Nightmares

Uninhabited is releasing in theatres during the month of May throughout Austalia and for North American fans there is a new poster for the film, with a synopsis here. The film is directed by Bill Bennett (In a Savage Land) and stars Geraldine Hakewill (first film), Bob Baines (U-Turn), Billy Milionis (Death's Requiem), and Henry James (first film). This professional cast that include a couple first-timers will be pitted against a supernatural beast in a "coral island paradise...[that] becomes a living hell" (Arrow). Already the film has slapped on the "inspired by actual events" label and this site challenges Bill Bennett to make available the newspaper article or news story on which Uninhabited is based, or at least relate the story (Arrow). A synopsis for the film can be found below.

The plot summary for Uninhabited:

"A young couple's deserted, coral island paradise getaway becomes a living hell when they discover that the island harbours something a long time dead, and it really doesn’t want them there" (Arrow).

Release Date: October, 2010 (Australia).

Director/writer: Bill Bennett.

Cast: Tasia Zalar, and Terry Siouriounis.

Hi Michael - we will have a website for the movie up in a few days which goes into the background a little further, but just to let you know that "inspired by actual events" comes from my staying on a remote coral island not far from where we shot UNINHABITED in 1974, and finding a grave and an abandoned shack and a visitors journal with references to a ghost, as per the movie. So it happened to me. Bill Bennett

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing that story and the cast details. When you have the website available could you send me a link here or on my e-mail at 28dayslateranalysis[at]gmail[.com]?

Thx,
Mike

Sure - the website will be live early next week, hopefully! Notice that I use the words "inspired by" though, because as you rightly point out, linking horror stories to supposedly real events has been ritually corrupted by filmmakers wanting to create marketing spin. I am a journalist by training and so I come at it all with that level of rigor, although of course in the end I'm making a movie! Bill

Hi Bill, I will include that FB link in my next article. I am going to post your second one-sheet. Also, if you have not secured distribution for North America can you drop me a quick note at the email above. I have a short proposal that I would like to pass along.

Thanks,
Mike
