Shelter Explores Multiple Personality Disorder from an Entertainment Perspective

The new film Shelter covers cases of multiple personality disorder, also known as dissociative personality disorder, in a controversial manner. In fact, the multiple personality disorder is still controversial despite the famous 1957 case involving Joanne Woodward, who supposedly had twenty-two personalities (Psych'). Are people with multiple personalities faking it? It is hard to tell a person's subjective experience and that is what will makes Shelter interesting. Is Adam making up his multiple personalities to manipulate others for attention, or is he a victim of trauma? Fans of the mysterious will have to go see Shelter when it releases in 2010, through Paramount Pictures, to find the truth. As well, the film is controversial because Julianne Moore's character denies that multiple personality disorder is in fact a mental disorder, despite being in the DSM IV. Her disbelief sentences many to the death chamber.

The synopsis for Shelter here:

"Dr. Cara Jessup has made a career out of defying the notion of multiple personality disorders. In the courtroom, her views and testimonies as an expert witness against multiple personality disorders have resulted in the death sentence of more than half a dozen murderers. Cara is devoted to science, but even her husband's horrific murder did not cause Cara to lose her faith in God. Not so for her young daughter Samantha, a committed unbeliever.

After a particularly troubling court case, Cara's father Dr. Harding introduces her to his new patient - Adam. The more she unearths about Adam, the more her life and those closest to her are endangered. As she explores Adam's past, Cara's world begins to fall apart and she is forced to question her strong beliefs in science and in God. Racing against the clock to solve the mystery surrounding Adam, Cara must not lose faith or it could have grave consequences for her and her family" (Trailer).
