Demon Days and Sleepless Nights: A Book Review

Writers: Richard Finney and D.L. Snell.

"Demon Days" is a co-partnered book from Richard Finney and D.L. Snell, which deals with Satan, the End of Days, and a recently engaged couple who want to have some fun in Hawaii. But the book would not be worth reading if there was only Blue Hawaiians being drunk and luaus on the beach, right? "Demon Days" adds more than just conflict as N.R.E.'s or near death experiences act as a gateway for demonic possession. Rich with action sequences this book only partially stumbles in the final few chapters. Otherwise, the book is near flawless.

The book begins with Sandy and Tom on vacation in Hawaii when they are involved in a helicopter crash. Tom unfortunately dies. Sandy manages to resuscitate him, but no longer is this the Tom of old. After experiencing a near death experience Tom talks of the Angel of Light and an occult theme grows. Sandy finds Father Olsen as a beacon in a storm that is now swirling with possessed children, murder, and dank basement altars. The book culminates in an assassination attempt in Israeli as the Holyland almost finds peace. But this is not the end!

The use of near death experiences is an excellent bridge from which to bring demonic possessions into a story. Tom and others who experience this real life phenomenon undergoe a transformation that is enhanced by the antagonist Dr. Fincher. Satan is the main antagonist in this story. Even the protagonist has her own N.D.E. and this creates an opportunity for a surprising twist in the final chapters of the book.

On the topic of final chapters, the push for a sequel can be seen near the end of the book and the continuous focus on character Sandy takes a little away from the energetic pacing of the earlier chapters. This is one book that will not have readers counting the pages to the end, but the interchanging of characters halts briefly between chapters 22-24. The excitement will fade for some temporarily here. As well, the build-up for a sequel means that readers might not be fully satisfied with the open ending, as a further book is set-up.

Readers of "Demon Days" will have to stay tuned as writers Richard Finney and D.L. Snell work on another book to conclude this novel. "Demon Days" is an easy recommend. On the short side of novels at a 188 pages, "Demon Days" has many enjoyable lines. Satan spouts shit and vinegar after being threatened by Father Olsen in a note: "Burn it and piss on the ashes" (Finney 188). And no one personifies Satan better than Finney and Snell in this current moment. Purchase this book and prepare for many sleepless nights!

Overall: 7-8 out of 10 (like a short amusement ride to hell and back).
