One Couple in Villains Finds a Pair Even More Nefarious in this First Trailer

Villains is an upcoming crime thriller and dark comedy from filmmakers Dan Berk (Stakelander) and Robert Olsen (Body, 2015). This film had its debut at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, with another stop at Cinepocalypse. Villains focuses on Bonnie and Clyde pairing, who have just ripped off a gas station. However, they hole up in a strange home, in which lives an even stranger family. In film, never go in the basement. Now, a trailer has been released for the film - ahead of this title's wide release in theatres.

The official synopsis mentions the pair fleeing for Florida. Unfortunately for Mickey (Bill Skarsgård) and Jules (Maika Monroe), their car breaks down and they are forced to break into a nearby home. Inside, they find a "dark secret" and two homeowners, whose hospitality is not very friendly.

Both Berk and Olsen have spoken about the film, after the SXSW debut. At this film event, they mentioned the mysterious nature of the film: "the conception of the idea is like this big puzzle of different pieces that came together at the same time (Daily Dead)." From the trailer, those pieces are the characters themselves. The filmmakers have also discussed this title's themes: "and so in that way, we stumbled upon this theme of love and the different ways it can make you better, but it can also corrupt you if that love is mixed with say, obsession (Daily)." Some of that corruption can be seen in how the homeowners treat their young daughter. Villains promises to be an insightful look at how relationships can go very wrong.

Villains will show in theatres this September 20th, across the United States. Gunpowder & Sky is handling the film's theatrical run. Rated Restricted, for language and violence, this title looks to push creativity into a darker area. And, fans of thrillers or of mystery can view the latest on Villains here.

Directors/writers: Dan Berk, Robert Olsen.
