"The Walking Dead" returned with another dark episode, titled "Four Walls and a Roof." This episode brought another split within the survivor group as Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) looked to leave for Washington, D.C. He has a world to save, after all. Daryl, Beth and Carol are still MIA. But, Gareth (Andrew J. West) is still nearby. The cannibals stormed the church, at night and events came to a head, quickly. Meanwhile, events, overall, are slowing down at this location. It is time to leave a donation in the plate and move on. "Four Walls and a Roof" was a slightly satisfying outing, set in a zombie apocalypse.
This episode began as the last one ended. Bob (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.) continued to have his leg eaten by Gareth and the other cannibals. His leg looked rather chewy. Zombies congregated nearby, but they never entered the fray. Instead, Gareth took the fight to Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the other survivors. They were ambushed and Rick delivered on his promise, to kill Gareth via a machete. Daryl and Carol made it into the episode, just under the wire. But, where is Beth?
Abraham's goal of saving the world is ridiculous. Maybe, he should start with clearing a street or two of the undead. His desire to create a viral solution to the zombie plague is likely too big, for this cartoonish hero. What are his real intentions? In a previous episode, he stated: "that is why we are waiting for our chance." So, his goal of leaving for Washington might be a thin veneer, for something more sinister. Either way, the world is in dire straights if it is relying on Abraham's rescue.
There is a lot more night shooting in this season. Much of this episode was shot in darkness. There are no street lights left in this fictional world. Pitched battles are fought almost entirely in darkness. For instance, Rick lays an ambush, just by residing in the church's shadows, or by entering through a darkened door. It is impossible to see Rick and the other survivors, waiting for Gareth to enter, or to see anything in the background. Gareth's death is also only shown in the barest of light. These sequences are compelling as it is difficult to decipher action in so much darkness.
Still, this episode was a bit of a slow down; the survivors have found safety at the church. But, a zombie apocalypse is not meant to be about safety. It is about danger! An impetus is required to get Rick and his crew back on the road. Otherwise, events will slowdown to a standstill, at this refuge. Characters are reuniting and bonding here, but action and conflict come from the road and the threats therein. And, this viewer is curious to see if anyone or anything remains in America's capitol.
"Four Walls and a Roof" offered a few darkened action sequences, with Bob succumbing to a zombie bite. This episode was a bit of slow down as characters tried to determine their next move. The next episode, "Slabtown," will bring some of the survivors to Beth's (Emily Kinney) location. And, it sounds like she has been kidnapped by another group of villains, which is stated in this showing's synopsis. Events at this location will hopefully step up the tempo slightly, with the beats in this episode slightly flat.
Overall: 7 out of 10 (Rick is truly turning into a monster, another minor character finds a gruesome exit).
