Shambling From Camp to Camp with Andrea and "The Walking Dead:" A Television Review ("I Ain't A Judas")

Director: Seith Mann.

Writers: Frank Darabont, Robert Kirkman, Nichole Beattie and Angela Kang.

Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun and Lauren Cohan.

Are viewers sticking with "The Walking Dead?" Because, Epis. 11, titled "I Ain't A Judas," was a bit of a pitstop in the zombie apocalypse. The show focused on divided loyalties, with trouble brewing in both the prison and Woodbury. However, there was very little actual conflict and lots of drama in this episode. The storm might be coming in "Clear," Epis. 12, but the events here almost stalled out the series.

For those who have not seen the show, "I Ain't A Judas" focused primarily on Andrea (Laurie Holden). Andrea continues to sit on the fence. This character has been in the show as a primary character since Seas. 1 and it continues to be difficult to tell what is going on in this character's head. You can almost see the neurotic hamster spinning frantically on its wheel in Andrea's conflicted mind.

In this episode, Andrea was shuttling back and forth between the prison and Woodbury. She was providing valuable information to both Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the Governor's (David Morrissey) group, with both parties ready to do battle a fourth time. Andrea gave Rick info' in regards to Phillip's training of troops and she also told the Governor about Rick's strength, in numbers. Andrea seems very confused about where her loyalties lie and she will have to decide who she truly backs, before she finds a bullet. Meanwhile, Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman) is siding with the Governor and Rick is preparing a fourth attack on Woodbury. Will this be the final showdown?

The bullshit is strong with this one.

This reviewer would have liked to have seen more tension in this showing. Instead, Andrea is making more enemies with characters and likely with viewers, as well. She seems liked by no one and used by most everyone. The Governor is using her for his sexual needs, while gleaning information from her jaunt to the enemy camp. Her welcome at the prison was cold from almost everyone but Carol (Melissa McBride). She seems unable to patch things up with Michonne (Danai Gurira) and this viewer is wondering if Michonne has romantic feelings for Andrea. Michonne seems overly excited about Andrea's return to the prison. Yet, the lack of conflict and action made this showing feel a little flat.

And, long time viewers of "The Walking Dead" might be noticing a recurring element with this show. The series seems to offer an action packed episode followed by a more slow paced showing. There is this up and down rhythm in the series. The last episode, "Home" offered a lot of action in its finale. But, there was no action in this episode. The writers seem to be focusing more on the upcoming episode "Clear," which promises more conflict than was seen here. Viewers can almost time their watching for a bi-weekly attendance. There was very little forward plot movement in this episode. This viewer is hoping for a stronger reason to watch in the next episode, because Andrea's wish-washiness is almost intolerable.

"The Walking Dead" fans can feel pretty comfortable skipping this episode. "I Ain't A Judas" only added a few interesting tidbits, with Andrea continuing to make enemies left, right and center. The character Tyreese and his group were given some much needed attention, but this episode did not propel Seas. 3 in any major direction. "I Ain't A Judas" was a bit of waylay station. Only a few late plot hints provide any reason to watch this episode at all. Viewers are best to skip this episode in favour of the next one, titled "Clear."

Overall: 6.5 out of 10 (nothing says frustration better than: Andrea, some development of characters, loyalties are being slightly challenged in this episode, a pretty flat showing overall).

*the zombies were very unthreatening in this episode. The undead seemed to fill the backdrop, only.

More details on this lackluster episode can be found at the AMC:

Screaming in Fear with The Whispering Dead: A Movie Review

*there are minor spoilers here.

Director/writer: Hunter G. Williams.

Writers: Scott Michael Campbell and Hunter G. Williams.

Cast: Chris Hayes, Jeff Stearns, Becka Adams, Angelina Lyubomirova, Callie Cameron, Kelsi Cullimore, Andrew Olson and Brooke Johnson.

The Whispering Dead is a paranormal piece that deals with a haunted hospital in Northern California. The Whispering Dead will be the first film to be released by production house Busted Knuckle Productions and the film offers an enjoyable ghostly time. The acting from the small cast is well done. As well, the hauntings are all filmed expertly with the help of infrared cameras. Although there is no music throughout, The Whispering Dead is a compelling supernatural thriller.

The film begins in Los Angeles. Six filmmakers are getting set to investigate rumours of burnings, cannibalism, suicide and murder at the nearby Edinburgh Hospital. They head up to the location, while talking about some of the building's past tragedies. The character Chris Mitchel (Chris Hayes) seems to delight in terrifying his co-workers with tales of disappearances and violence. The other crew members are slightly jarred. But, the real thrills come when all six break into the hospital. Now, the ghosts are released and the characters are tasked with finding a way out. The spirits have other plans for them, however.

Elizabeth in shadows (Johnson).

Some of the cast members and characters are a little more interesting than others. The film seems to focus on the characters: Chris, Jeff (Jeff Stearns) and Becka. Becka is the producer of the new reality show and actress Becka Adams is able to deliver the stress of deadlines, production delays and the difficulty in creating a paranormal experience for television. This character also delivers some of the best snarky lines as Becka chastises her female co-workers. Becka is a fun character to follow, until a spirit comes knocking.

Actor Chris Hayes also delivers a compelling performance. His character, Chris, is the frontman for the series and he keeps the film moving forward. He is often ushering the other characters from room to room, while also creating some of the paranormal gags. Chris holds and impromptu seance, which is helped by some off camera trickery. His gags are no longer needed when three ghostly young girls flow in and out of scenes. Hayes' performance is well researched and his acting skills deliver some of the much needed energy in the film.

Director Hunter G. Williams also captures all of the supernatural elements effectively. The film relies on a number of handheld shots. The characters provide much of the footage as they film darkened halls and rooms. However, there are several infrared cameras, which shoot the action from overhead. Much of the film takes place at night, so these cameras are necessary. These cameras also add a creepy vibe. Shapes seem to move in and out of the backgrounds, some are real and others are imagined. Williams also captures many of the action shots believably. Characters fly down corridors with the camera partially following them. The visual sphere is consistently well shot.

This critic, of course, has a few minor complaints. The Whispering Dead does not utilize music, except in early scenes. Music is often able to amplify tension, but it is absent here. The producers likely decided to remove any instances of a soundtrack in order to focus on the realism of the action on screen and amongst characters. As well, a supernatural element is introduced early with the character Elizabeth. But, her history is only partially developed. A story can often increase its depth by delivering a thought provoking or well fleshed out antagonist. And, this reviewer wanted to know about Elizabeth's other-worldly powers. These minor critiques might not apply to other viewers and their opinions of the film, though.

The Whispering Dead is nearing a distribution date as Hunter G. Williams and other members of Busted Knuckle Productions finalize a release date. Fans of the paranormal will find a few scares in the productions. Also, the well written dialogue creates for some laughter as each crew member does their best to scare others in the production. Well acted and effectively shot, The Whispering Dead is a fun film that increases its creepy vibe with some non-traditional camera work.

Overall: 7.5 out of 10 (the protagonists are given lots of time to develop, a good setting, a solid script and great dialogue, the backstories of the hospital are one of the film's best elements).

Story details on this production can be found at the Busted Knuckle Productions website:

Momentum Pictures Releases Prieto's Crime Thriller Pusher on DVD and Blu-Ray

Luis Prieto's Pusher
has recently released on DVD and Blu-Ray (February 11th). Momentum Pictures has released the film in the United Kingdom, exclusively. Prieto's latest thriller is a remake of Nicolas Winding Refn's 1996 film. In Prieto's version, the location has changed to London and the actors have increased in caliber.

Richard Coyle stars as Frank, a low level drug dealer. Frank is left on the hook for 55K GBP when he loses a large amount of cocaine. Actor Mem Ferda plays Hakan, a drug enforcer. Both Hakan and Frank square off throughout the film as Frank desperately tries to gather the money he owes.

Critical reception for this film has been fairly positive. The film website Cine-Vue notes the glut of UK based crime thrillers, but Amon Warmann likes the action in the film: "it is one of the better drug fueled thrillers to be released in recent years." The quality of the film is definitely high. As well, the review website Film School Rejects enjoyed the film's acting, especially from British actress Agyness Deyn: "Prieto’s Pusher, taken on its own merits, is a pretty good film. It’s well shot and extremely well-acted, particularly by Deyn, whose Flo communicates so much with her beautiful eyes." Deyn plays Frank's seductive love interest. And, this reviewer scored the film a 7.5 out of 10. A review of Pusher on 28DLA is available here: Pusher Review on 28DLA.com. There is a lot to like in Prieto's exciting thriller. "The Walking Dead" Hits Close to "Home:" A Television Review

*there are spoilers here.

Director: Seith Mann.

Writers: Frank Darabont, Robert Kirkman and Nichole Beattie.

Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Laurie Holden, Sarah Wayne Callies, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker and David Morrissey.

"The Walking Dead" continues into the second half of Seas. 3 with another exciting episode, "Home." "Home" brought lots of conflict to this apocalyptic series. Events were especially climactic in the show's violent finale. Creator Glen Mazzara also continues to show a good understanding of pacing as events come to a head quickly. Meanwhile, other characters are struggling to figure out their roles, with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) still grief-stricken. The Dixon brothers, Merle (Michael Rooker) and Daryl (Norman Reedus), bicker in the backwoods, while the final prison attack offered a few surprises. All of this chaos created another thrilling episode.

The plots and storylines seemed a little fragmented. "Home" began back at the prison, with Rick still seeing visions of Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies). Rick has some feelings that need to be put to rest. Meanwhile, Glenn (Steven Yeun) is petitioning for leadership of this small band of survivors at the prison. But, who will follow? At Woodbury, Andrea (Laurie Holden) is being distracted once again by the Governor's (David Morrissey) charms. She seems oblivious to the fact that not one other character would support Andrea's role as a leader. Characters would not likely follow her directions to a local 7-11. Then, the Dixon brothers reunite back at the prison with Rick and his group just in time to offset an attack by the Governor. Stories were developing on several different fronts.

Axel exits permanently in "Home."

Glenn seemed to be forefront in this episode. Glenn was conducting some reconnaissance on the prison, with the undead again infiltrating the building. Glenn also confronted Maggie (Lauren Cohan) about her encounter with the Governor. Maggie relates her humiliating story and Glenn appears incensed. There is little he can do, however. Glenn petitions to lead the group at the prison, but he does not seem up to the task. When the chips are down and the Governor is at his doorstep, he does very little. He seems unable to step up in a true crisis. Glenn will continue to take on a secondary role in his group, unless everyone else at the prison disappears violently, like the character Axel (Lew Temple).

Meanwhile, the Dixon brothers are bonding out in the woods. Daryl shows his high moral character by intervening in a zombie attack on a small and desperate family. The other brother, Merle, wants to simply rob them instead. Merle is a little more morally dubious. Their opposing views on other people leads to a conflict, which has taken three seasons to take place. As well, the Dixon brothers share their haunting past, at the hands of an abusive father. These two characters have a long history and their brotherhood is tested when Daryl heads for the prison and for his "Home." It remains to be seen if Merle will be welcomed back by the other survivors.

The finale for "Home" seemed taken from another apocalyptic vision. This critic was reminded of George Miller's The Road Warrior (1981), during this show's finale. The Governor's attack on the base seemed more of a test, with Axel falling, shockingly, to a sniper bullet. The Governor seems happy to wait the prison survivors out much like the Lord Humungus, in this early '80s film. However, the Governor does not want oil; he wants to repair his bruised ego. His attack is only half-hearted and he seems content to simply make his presence known. The mad rush through the fence by a customized van was pulled off with some flair. This strange looking vehicle looked similar to some of the many trucks in Miller's earlier work. Zombies are released by the van into the field. This scene added some much needed spectacle into the series.

This viewer was hoping for a couple of elements. The Governor needed to press the attack. But, he gives up with the prize within reach. As well, Glenn had a perfect opportunity to disable the Governor's vehicle, but he just drives by. Glenn seems unwilling to risk a direct confrontation. The writers appear to be teasing further conflict in this late battle.

"Home" is another episode from creator Mazzara that brings a lot of energy to the film's pacing. Events are moving ahead quickly. This fast pacing is a nice improvement over Seas. 2. As well, the conflict in this episode and other recent showings seems believable. Rick's psychological meltdown shows a man struggling with too much death. Mazzara also seems to be playing with the theme of leadership, with certain characters trying out this role. Though, some characters are more natural as leaders, compared to others. Overall, "Home" was a great episode, with an exciting finale and more interesting personality conflicts.

Overall: 7.85 out of 10 (great conclusion, lots of spectacle in Act III, interesting conflicts, themes of leadership, suitable action and surprises).

Get Set to Ignite with Death Race: Inferno: A Movie Review

Director: Roel Reine.

Writers: Tony Giglio, Paul W.S. Anderson, Tony Giglio and Paul W.S. Anderson.

Cast: Luke Goss, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, Dougray Scott, Fred Koehler, and Tanit Phoenix.

The Death Race series of films are turning into a bit of a franchise. The original, starring David Carridine, came out way back in 1975. Then, Paul W. S. Anderson remade the original in 2008. The remake starred a very angry Jason Statham. Since 2008, the lead role of stunt driver Frankenstein has been played by the soft-spoken Luke Goss. Director Roel Reine has made the latest two sequels: Death Race 2 (2010) and the film reviewed here, Death Race: Inferno (2013). Reine's latest is his best to date. Reine is perfecting the action film with his frenetic directing style. Meanwhile, this second sequel blends genres. The action genre is prominent, but there are elements of romance and the thriller genre here, as well. Overall, Death Race: Inferno is a superbly shot film that brings a lot of excitement to the screen.

In the story, The Weyland Corporation has sold the Death Race pay-per-view television show to Niles York (Dougray Scott). York's plans for the show are to take the sereies to a global audience. Soon, the latest showing of Death Race is set for South Africa's deserts. Here, ten convicts must fight to the death, in order to receive clemency. Each character is a murderer. And, there can be only one winner. The character Frankenstein has his eyes on the prize, but he also has eyes for the beautiful Katrina (Tanit Phoenix) and for taking down the selfish and malicious Niles. A great deal of conflict takes place over the course of the film's 100 minutes.

Is the Frankenstein character a hero or anti-hero?

A lot of that conflict involves violence. The car and truck races cover several kilometers. And, the racetrack is littered with obstacles. The drivers have to navigate through small shanty towns, while rioters threaten to throw the race into further turmoil. As well, local warlords also get in on the action. Technicals flood the racecourse. There is little down time to relax, in the film. The racers spend their time off beating each other up, or the other guards. It seems that someone is constantly laying the smack down on someone else. The prominent use of violence manages to keep the pacing moving ahead at a very quick clip.

If the violence is not satisfying for viewers, then there are abundant scenes of sexuality. Frankenstein is reigniting his flame for his former girlfriend Katrina, but some of the other navigators also have their eye on this top driver. Then, Frankenstein's mechanic, Goldberg (Danny Trejo), is using his hospital stay to charm one of the nurses. Goldberg is not satisfied with having his wound stitched, alone. York is also getting in on the action. He uses his power and influence to seduce the local official, Satana (Hlubi Mboya). Basically, most of the characters are disrobing many of the other characters. There is a lot of eye candy to be seen in Reine's latest.

All of the action is shot with an expert shooting style. Reine appears very comfortable with the action film. He uses aerial shots to capture much of the racing. Events can easily be seen with these overhead shots. Reine also uses lots of quick tracking shots to film the action. This shooting style keeps the action tense. Also, the camera is often in the centre of the action, which will make many viewers feel as if they are a part of the dangerous events onscreen. From close-ups to medium shots, Reine is consistently keeping the visual sphere interesting. Yet, the scenes are often only held for a few seconds. The quick changing of scenes can be unsettling at first, but Reine's shooting techniques are almost always compelling. Viewers will be drawn into the well shot action.

Death Race: Inferno is a fun action film, which will satisfy many viewers. The action and sexuality keep events thrilling, while this second sequel expands the film's premise. There are likely to be future sequels added to this franchise as Death Race goes international. This viewer would like to see Reine lens another film in this series as Reine knows how to deliver what viewers want: explosions, gunfire and a gorgeous cast.

Overall: 8 out of 10 (this is an excellent straight-to-DVD release, characters are slightly shallow but polished, tension and conflicts are well delivered, the pacing is full speed ahead, lots to like here).

*this title releases on DVD and Blu-Ray February 15th.

Hansel & Gretel Get Baked and Forgetful: A Movie Review

*a few minor spoilers are here.

Director: Duane Journey.

Writer: David Tillman.

Cast: Lara Flynn Boyle, Michael Welch, Molly Quinn, and Cary Elwes.

It is often interesting to see how a film markets itself. Hansel & Gretel Gets Baked makes note of producer Mark Morgan's attachment to the Twilight series of films. His name is mentioned instead of the cast as seen left. However, Hansel & Gretel Gets Baked is not really for the Twilight crowd. There are no glittery vampires here, nor werewolf lovers. Instead, there is almost an equal amount of both comedy and horror. Jokes abound and so does the gore. Meanwhile, actress Lara Flynn Boyle anchors the film expertly with her character, the notorious witch of German fairytales. All of the performances are solid, but this film will be remembered for its hilarity and light-hearted mood.

Gretel (Molly C. Quinn) likes her weed and so does her stoner boyfriend, Ashton (Andrew James Allen). Gretel gets the munchies and Ashton is ordered to track down more Black Forest High. Along the way, Ashton meets one shady drug dealer, a decrepit old woman with a taste for baked goodies. He is no match for this hellbound witch and soon, Ashton is on the witch's menu. Other characters, from meter guys (Cary Elwes) to local drug dealers, each find themselves conflicting with the wily witch and few can best her.

Let the witch hunt begin!

The horror elements in Hansel & Gretel Get Baked are limited. This is mostly a comedic tale. Of course, the witch is a character often seen in horror. The witch in this piece is sinister and conniving. She offers a few surprises, but there is little to fear in this piece. Much of the horror is relegated to several gore scenes. Early in this title, a character has his eye skewered. Another man has his throat slit and most of the blood soaked goods are on the big screen. The protagonists are often endangered, but the focus of the film is mostly on the comedy.

This picture offers lots of great comedic lines. Much of the comedy is focused on getting high or strange sexual practices. One drug dealer wants oral sex from the old witch, "without her dentures." But, a gummer is not on the witch's itinerary. He is eviscerated for his comments. In another scene, a minor character cannot remember what he is talking about, after smoking some of the Black Forest High. These scenes and many more will create laughter. The comedy in this film was the highlight for this viewer.

Much of that laughter is provided by Lara Flynn Boyle's great performance. Boyle, as the witch, is often taunting and teasing her next victim. Her expressions are subtle enough where the viewer will get the joke but the opposing character will not. There is a little bit of dramatic irony in this film. As well, Boyle is able to bring a solid presence to her character. When she is in the scene, she seems to control it, or the focus of photography is placed centrally on her. Her acting skills bring menace and charm in equal portions. Boyle's performance is one of many reasons to see Hansel & Gretel Get Baked, when it releases shortly.

This film will show through video-on-demand and via a limited theatrical run February 19th. Horror and especially comedy fans should take notice of this date. There are a number of well written scenes to laugh at in this piece. Hansel & Gretel Get Baked is enjoyable almost all the way through. Only the third act brings some tedium as scenarios are repeated. However, this modern retelling of the Brothers Grimm's famous tale is well worth a watch.

Overall: 7.75 out of 10 (a smallish film, some gore, great lines, well acted).
