The Night Shift and Walking a Fine Line: A Movie Review

*A screener of this film was provided by Fighting Owl Films.

Director/writer: Thomas Smith.

Thomas Smith's The Night Shift is based on a 2009 short, of the same name (review here). Now, Smith has expanded the mythos of a graveyard full of undead and rotting residents to a full length feature film. Currently on the film festival circuit with a showing at the Stanley Hotel May 6th, The Night Shift is hard to classify in genre, but the film is full of campy fun. Rue Morgan (Khristian Fulmer), an obvious reference to Rue Morgue magazine, is in the center of the action, with werewolves, and undead Civil War relics threatening to oust him as cemetery caretaker. The two hours spent in the graveyard is mostly a tame time, with The Night Shift struggling to find some much needed pointy teeth.

Starting with a zombie romance is almost always a good move, but adding in a talking skeleton is even better. Herbie (Soren Odom) plays the bag of bones, who is the sidekick in a two part comedic act. Rue Morgan is the second part in the comedy duo and some of the jokes just do not come across as edgy enough. The Night Shift seems to stay in PG territory, despite Herbie blowing up fictional demons, like Adremalech (Andrew Crider). The rolling comedy from Herbie and others could have rode the line closer to adult material, rather than safety of the adolescent.

You have to feel pity for the central character, Rue, as he lusts for Claire Rennfield (Erin Lilley) - another obvious reference to the Resident Evil film or video game series. It must be really hard to pick up chicks, when you are rotting above and below the waist. Claire seems to encourage this undead character's advances, while she promises to unseat Rue with his competitor Captain Roderick (Jonathan Pruitt). The romance seems more friendly than true passion and The Night Shift does not get the chemistry quite right between these two characters.

One of the more interesting features in The Night Shift is the use of office politics. Just like any corporation, the cemetery has a group of mysterious absent board members, who seem to screw much of anything that goes on in their establishment, the graveyard. Also, not only is Rue unmanned in the area of romance, but he is symbolically removed of his pistol and position as resident caretaker. Soon, Teen Wolf makes an appearance and residents run amok, as Rue does his best to regain his title as Alpha male of the necropolis.

The Night Shift is simply an unobtrusive, light romp through a graveyard, where creatures of the night are free to do as they please. Even George A. Romero makes an appearance and one begins to wonder what Smith could do with his next film, if he tried to make the material a little more edgy. The 120 minutes is not time wasted, but the film could have strengthened some of the reel's slower parts with a jump scare or two. More make-up effects are also necessary in Smith's next endeavour, to create a more terrifying graveyard scenario.

Editing/photography/sound: 6 (some issues with sound and adr, or dubbing).
Directing/control/style: 7 (some interesting night shoots, good diversity of characters).
Writing/plot/unfolding of events: 6 (more tension required, or mystery).

Overall: 6.3 (entertaining, but some mistakes usually associated with first feature films e.g. changing cameras or lenses mid scene).

CW's Supernatural: A Television Review and A Tribute to the Wild West in "Frontierland"

Creator: Eric Kirpke.

Director: Guy Norman Bee.

Writers: Jackson Stewart, Daniel Loflin and Andrew Dabb.

The boundaries between pop culture and the occult gets mixed up again in the latest episode of Supernatural. In “Frontierland,” both Sam and Dean request that they get sent back in time in order to find the phoenix and use its ashes in order to defeat the Mother of All. This episode is the most entertaining ever since they broke the fourth wall in “The French Mistake.”

Much to everyone else’s amusement, this era is thankfully not like what Dean expects it to be. Instead of a Spaghetti Western, the real west is a reflection of the times—people struggling to make end’s meat in an untamed land.

Director Guy Bee hit all the right cues by giving Dean a reality check when everything he says and does do not make sense to the people he's intereacting with. One can't help but feel sorry for him, and Dean needs to find some real grit in the genre he so fondly adores and knows nothing about. Just like Back to the Future II, he has that adorable, oh crap type of look when he doesn’t get to walk away, into the distant sunset. There's more to come but was that reference to that age-old Speilberg classic really needed? It probably would've been better without, but Supernatural has really gone overboard with its nods to 80's pop culture this season. Hopefully the last few episodes will tone it down a notch.

But with the recent announcement of green-lighting season seven, the Winchester brothers will have more adventures in store for them. And hopefully the Mother of All storyline will extend past this one. Who she really is, and what the confrontation will entail not in the coming episode, but down the road will prove interesting. "Fontierland" establishes a few new motifs that will no doubt affect the Winchester's future. And if this season continues exploring Classical mythology, perhaps Orpheus may make an appearance.

Audiences do know that Sam is told not to look back to his past year when he was with his grandfather, and at what’s been sealed away. To do so is dangerous. Dean has travelled to Hell and back himself, and even Bobby stared at the face of death a few times himself. When the real Death appears again, that should not be a shocker to audiences. When legendary heroes die, even their souls have to go somewhere.

Curiously, the phoenix, Elias Finch, here does not resurrect, so it says something about immortality. When they’re gone, they are erased from the mortal plane of existance and their energy disapates into the wind. In traditional lore, this fiery bird is said to rise from its own ashes, and to not witness it must be a set up for a future episode. As previous seasons have demonstrated, some mortals are ‘the chosen ones;’ Lucifer can only enter a special vessel without burning the body out. Perhaps this fact is true for legendary creatures as well, like the phoenix.

Either the ashes that Sam and Dean now have will either be unceremoniously dropped or shaped into some device where an innocent will get in the way, and thus inherit the phoenix-force. As the next episode title, “Mommy Dearest,” suggests, Eve will take this individual and nurture that person to be a leader of her new pantheon of evil monsters. This episode will be more than just about their reunion with Mary Winchester.

This episode also features Samuel Colt, an important figure in the series canon. He built the gun that can kill any immortal for good—save for Lucifer. In meeting up with Sam Winchester, Colt reveals that he is more interested in not continuing in the hunter profession. But as the final minutes suggest, he has a change of heart. For this old codger, he found his own true grit after a pep session with his contemporary from the future.

Even Castiel reverts back to how he was first introduced. He reveals some important facts about what souls are valued as for the angels and demons who highly prize them. Instead of just social currency, they represent a different kind of power. To see him reach in and make use of Bobby’s vitality to bring the Winchester Brothers back show that these souls also represent faith. To keep this concept as simple as that brings the entire series full circle, since the series is built on how the two brothers simply have faith in each other to overcome adversity. As long as they remain united, along with Bobby, they can overcome anything. Now if the angels in Heaven can only realize the same thing. Sadly, their civil war is simply going nowhere and they just don’t get it.

That’s why God abandoned them.

Wake Wood and Pagan Bedlam: A Movie Review

*Watch out for spoilers below.

Director: David Keating.

Writers: David Keating, and Brendan McCarthy.

Wake Wood is the latest horror production from the United Kingdom based Hammer Films. Irish director David Keating shows his knowledge of Pagan folklore, with fellow writer Brendan McCarthy weaving a tale of demonic murder. Released in the UK March 28th, Wake Wood creates its thrills by introducing a set of Pagan rules: those dead for a year can be returned for three days. Except, characters Louise (Eva Birthistle) and Patrick (Aidan Gillen) are too grief stricken to obey the laws of nature, nor the rules of witchy townsfolk. The result is bedlam.

While trying to avoid too many spoilers, the married couple mentioned above break one of the cardinal rules of Wake Wood, after they lose their daughter in a freak animal attack. The resulting fourty-five minutes involves the citizens of Wake Wood attempting to track down a murderous little girl. You have seen killing kids before, but here, one girl has brought back a demon with her, from the afterlife. Apparently, lying has its consequences.

Also apparent is the demon's contempt for humanity and the local wildlife. This is not an overly gory piece; however, some of the Pagan cult's followers find the wrong end of an arrow, or a cleaver. Soon, viewers might find themselves shouting at the screen: "just bury her back under the earth." Demons are clever, though and Wake Wood shows some similarities to another demonic child from The Omen, named Damien Thorn (Harvey Stephens). The problems caused by the supernatural are not easily undone.

One of the interesting film elements of Wake Wood is how one lie can then spiral into further and further murder. Like a steam roller, Patrick sees more and more death, while he plots having a child from a recently deceased wife. Once the demon is released it is really hard to put it back into the box. As well, demonic children are surely more curse than blessing.

This is an independent film, shot in Ireland and while Wake Wood is not often scary, the film is an interesting look at fictional Pagan mythology and the consequences of breaking supernatural rules. The rules conjured up by filmmakers David Keating, and Brendan McCarthy create the tension, from which a child is free to roam and to murder. The results are unnatural and for viewers full of I-told-you-so moments.

Photography/composition/lighting: 7 (all of the production looks professional).
Acting/believability/characters: 7.5 (well acted, good casting).
Writing/story/plot: 8 (unique, a few twists).

Overall: 7.5 out of 10.

Mandrake and Sitting on the Fence: A Movie Review

Director: Tripp Reed.

Writer: David Ray.

From the creators of the upcoming Ice Quake and Mega Cyclone comes the human-eating Mandrake. This SyFy Original premiered in early April, with a future showing in May and this production follows a research team into the jungles of Central America. Here, actors Nick Gomez, Max Martini, and Wayne Pere play anthropologists in search of an ancient, yet cursed, dagger. Soon, the mandrake, normally a poisonous plant, is released and viewers might be searching for something unique in this SyFy Original; this reviewer had to dig deep (get it) to find its uniqueness. A killing bush, the inclusion of two, possibly three villains, and the talk of Conquistador curses creates some of the thrills in this relatively action packed film adventure.

The real mandrake root is actually very poisonous and according to ancient legend, those who unearth the mandrake are soon to hear its cry and later die. Much of the cast in Mandrake find this myth to be true, with more than 3/4 of the characters wiped out by a thirty foot plant - who has a temper. The CGI effects of the root are saved for the end, while its many limbs seek out local jungle dwellers during much of the film. Few production companies will take on plant warfare, but this is no Little Shop of Horrors and Mandrake just does not bear much fruit.

However, Benito Martinez (Saw) as Varga competes with this plant, which really looks like a tree, for best villain. Local Yamballi Tribesmen also fight for screen time, as they sacrifice local archealogists to the great god of the jungle. After awhile, you realize that there might be a little too much going on in Tripp Reed's (Rapid Exchange) latest production. But SyFy Originals tend to be on the ambitious side of film productions, in order to keep the pacing moving in some kind of direction. In Mandrake, almost any direction leads into the maw of a towering jungle plant.

The final element that stands out in Mandrake is all the talk of invading conquerors and ancient curses. The supernatural features lead to great lines like: "the jungle feeds on the blood of the invaders." It must be hard to say lines like these with a straight face as an actor, but the cast gets the believable tension just right. The aforementioned dagger also holds the key to de-branching the mandrake, and the knife's appearance causes conflict, as some seek answers to their ancestry in its glint, or others simply want it for its re-sale value. In the end, few characters manage to survive a sacrificing tribe, nor a jungle teeming with killer roots, or the mandrake, itself. Hopefully, viewers make it all the way to the end for the heart-stopping finale (you have to have seen it, to get this joke).

Mandrake will show again on the SyFy Network May 21st and this film is not as good as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978), but the film is almost constantly action packed. The acting is believable and Mandrake can be ingested without too much strain on the frontal lobes. Maybe see this one as a build-up to another attacking vine movie from Carter Smith, called The Ruins (2008), as this film is light on horror and overall, a little hard to digest (haha, get it? mandrakes are poisonous - groan)!

Overall: 6 out of 10 (no problems in production, acting is good, no stand out actors though, action focused, with little horror, the film needed some sort of a darker edge).
