October '11 Graphic Novel Preview: From Vampires to the "Supernatural"

*A preview of: "Supernatural," "30 Days of Night Omnibus," "The Lovecraft Library, Volume One: Horror Out of Arkham," and "Monocyte."

Tis the season to be jolly for comic book readers. The lists are out, and several titles deserve mention: these books will no doubt make Halloween a merry time for fans of horror as it crosses the media platform barrier. Television, film and novels are getting even more shelf space to bare their fangs with, and some of them are mouth-wateringly enticing:

Mike Mignola (Hellboy) and Christopher Golden (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) are penning "Baltimore, Volume 1: The Plague Ships Trade Paperback."

Set after World War I, Europe is suddenly flooded with vampires. A lone soldier is determined to wipe out the creatures that are ravaging the countrysides, and that is becoming a bit of an obsession. This title is getting an affordable paperback edition by Dark Horse Comics.

From DC Comics, fans of "Supernatural" the TV series can get more than a simple double dose of the Winchesters in "Supernatural," the comic book. The transition to this medium is no doubt inevitable, but unless it gets a good team of writers and artists behind it, this title might be worth skipping. WildStorm Productions made an attempt in the past, but with the writer’s strike back in ‘08, creator Eric Kripke could not be involved. Writer Brian Wood will helm this ongoing series. He is well known for his works with "DMZ" and "Northlanders." His plans for the brothers in the first issue will be to send them to Scotland.

Elsewhere, the cold wastelands of Alaska sound may just as equally be chilling. From IDW is a new series that will continue the dread from Steve Niles, creator of "30 Days of Night." For those who need to catch up or be reacquainted with the universe, IDW also has the 30 Days of Night Omnibus. This 360-page trade paperback collects the stories that started it all: "30 Days of Night," "Dark Days" and "Return to Barrow."

If this collection is not enough, this company also has The Lovecraft Library, Volume One: Horror Out of Arkham that's scheduled for October release. This collection reprints Lovecraft's tales that are set in this strange little locale: "Herbert West-Reanimator," "The Unnamable," "The Colour out of Space," "The Dunwich Horror" and "The Shadow Over Innsmouth."

Clocking in at 232 pages, there will be illustrations by painter menton3, and a new introduction by noted author, Robert Weinberg, to kickstart this new compilation. These editions will no doubt put the old Del Ray paperback editions to shame.

And when that isn't enough, IDW offers "Monocyte," a four issue limited series, which features more of mention3's artwork. He is also penning this tale too. When a necromancer is summoned by Death (Azreal) to carry out some deeds, there is a good chance that the bargain being made here is in not what you know, but in will be.

But getting back to the movie front, "Billy Majesty’s Humpty Dumpty" will get the motion picture treatment. Viewers will get a tease at this trade paperback that reveals a few chilling things about life in the bayou, ufos and aliens. No dates have been given yet for the movie.

Dynamite Entertainment brings back the original Barnabas Collins in their ongoing series the cult classic. The cover art looks promising and perhaps what's old will truly become new again.

Fans will have a bit of everything from multiple entertainment genres to keep the blood flowing. Or should that be anxiously waiting?
