DC Comics Gets Dark with Some Haunting New Upcoming Titles

DC Comics is doing more than revamping their signature line of comics with the coveted issue #1 on the front cover. More than 52 titles will be affected, and this also includes a line of comics that explores the dark and mysterious side of the DC Universe.

Swamp Thing and Animal Man are just one of many titles that's seeing the resurrection man–not in the literal sense, but in celebrating a genre that may perhaps get a new label as well, depending on how well each of the series go.

According to the press release, "On the 40th anniversary of the character's creation, the New York Times bestselling writer of American Vampire, Scott Snyder, teams up with Yannick Paquette (Batman, Incorporated) to bring horror back to the DC Universe in Swamp Thing #1."

Most of these titles have respected names in the comic book industry working on these coming issues. The list includes Justice League Dark, penned by writer Peter Milligan and artist Mikel Janin; Demon Knights starring DC's own version Jekyll and Hyde, Etrigan, by writer Paul Cornell and artists Diogenes Neves and Oclair Alber; Frankenstein, Agent of Shade gets a thematic reworking of a monster by writer Jeff Lemire and artist Alberto Ponticelli; and Resurrection Man will be done by the writing team of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning with artist Fernando Dagnino. In this final title, the hero wakes up with new powers each time he's killed.

While I, Vampire may sound like a tribute to Isaac Asimov's I, Robot or even Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles , but given this comic series' premise, there is potential for a hit. Hero Andrew Benett must save humanity from the violent uprising of his fellow vampires, even if it means exterminating his own kind. Originally a comic book series that appeared from 1981 to 83 in House of Mystery, this series is perhaps the most interesting of the lot that will become available.

But not to be outdone, an old favourite, Priscilla Kitaen gets an ongoing series, Voodoo. She must confront the secrets of her past to make sense of the nightmare her life has suddenly become!
