Clive Barker to Scribe "Hellraiser #1" with Matrix Alum Larry Wachowski

*This article was written by fellow 28DLA scribe Ed Sum.

Fans of Clive Barker's "Hellraiser" should take note: the man himself is returning to pen the next official chapter of this franchise in comic book form, to be published by Boom! Studios and the pivotal issue is slated to hit stands March 2011.

Barker is set to change things around in the configuration, the realm, where the Cenobites lurk. And there are changes in store for Pinhead, the leader of the Cenobites. As a bonus, this first issue will contain 40 pages, with a bonus story written by co-writer and co-director of the Matrix trilogy, Larry Wachowski.

This comic book release should be no surprise to people keeping tabs on a two decade old franchise.

In the video front, Hellraiser: Revelations, the next installment of the series, is set for 2011 as a direct-to-video release. The comic book does not tie-in to the movie. Like previous films, Barker is not involved in this film project.

Victor Crowley to Fillet the Unfortunate on DVD and Blu-Ray February 1st!

Upcoming Horror Movies has got the low down on Adam Green's latest horror film, Hatchet II. This film will be available on both DVD and Blu-Ray February 1st and the extras on the discs are nothing to scoff at. These formats will have audio commentaries, while the Blu-Ray version will offer two extra featurettes entitled: "“First Look: Hatchet II" and "Meet the FX Team." Check out the entire list of special features inside.

Hatchet II released in a limited fashion theatrically during the first week of October. However, returns were dismal and box office gross did not come close to recouping the $4 million production price tag. Reviews have also not been kind.

Others have said: "witless and dull" (Village Voice), and "swift and amusingly brainless, Hatchet II more than delivers on splatter expectations" (New York Times). So, this film is for gorehounds, while those expecting in-depth dialogue, or complex plot developments might want to venture to other films. More details inside.

The synopsis for Hatchet II is here:

"Picking up right where the splatter-tastic original ended, Marybeth escapes the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling iconic killer Victor Crowley. After learning the truth about her family’s connection to the hatchet-wielding madman, Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact the bloodiest revenge against the bayou butcher" (28DLA).
Release Date: February 1st, 2010 (DVD, Blu-Ray).

Director/writer: Adam Green.

Cast: Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, AJ Bowen, Tom Holland, Clare Grant, Tony Todd, R.A. Mihailoff, and Kathryn Fiore.

Zombies: A Record of the Year of Infection and Running from Infection: A Book Review

Zombies: A Record of the Year of Infection is a short novel from author Don Roff in persona as Dr. Robert Twombly, which released in October, 2009; the many illustrations are presented by noted California artist Chris Lane. Both of these creators live on the westcoast of the US and this first person account of a global zombie apocalypse adds a few twists and turns into this horrifying literature genre. A biologist takes on a world of the undead, while documenting his bloody journey in a bird watching journal. This book reviewer could not stop turning over a hundred pages of this novel, until the final mysterious conclusion. Zombies: A Record of the Year of Infection will entertain readers with new zombie behaviours, while alluding to food contamination as the source of infection.

This illustrated novel begins with the central character and biographer Dr. Robert Twombly seeing a fatal infection spread firsthand in a Seattle based hospital. Staff and patients both succumb to a debilitating disease, whose source is later discovered to be C-88 (a food additive). Soon the infected die, only to be resurrected once again. Their new slightly dead state leads them to pursue and infect others. Soon, 5 billion people are sent scouring the countryside in search of ever more victims. Can Dr. Twombly stop the infection, or at least slow it down? The ending leaves one believing that this desperate doctor is remedied of the confines of life through death, but others will have different interpretations.

Not all the intriguing details will be given away here, but some stalwart groups of people manage to survive the first wave of infection. Dr. Twombly's journey from downtown Seattle to Bellingham and farther north into Strawberry Ridge, Saskatchewan is a tale of caution and danger. Along his journey, Twombly meets other survivors. Some are more congenial than others, with some recklessly conflicting against the undead swarms to poor results. All seems hopeless when a farming community is overrun, until word of another human encampment in Churchill promises further, yet temporary, shelter.

There are no page numbers in this short novel, as it is meant to be presented in journal form. Instead, there are pictures of the zombie apocalypse, in full colour. Survivors are given detail in drawings and the narration keeps the interest focused, while Dr. Twombly's journey moves ever closer to its tragic conclusion.

Especially interesting are the new skills associated with zombies. Zombies, in the novel, can open doors with tools, some hold onto behaviours of the past, while groups of zombies form to take on guarded human settlements. Although the undead are far from brilliant, these new strategies show how a zombie infection could spread. The end results favour those who are infected, rather than those immune or unexposed, as Roff would have one believe.

There really are few flaws to this reading, except for the lightness of the material. This cautionary story of foodstuffs contaminated by bio-engineering can easily be read in a single sitting. So, the final words and journal entries will likely leave some, like this reader, wanting a little more. However, the material that is here is compelling and the lines will quickly be devoured by zombie literature fans.

This novel was released in October of 2009 and still sales are strong for Zombies: A Record of the Year of Infection; there is a reason for this. This novel is an enjoyable time, both visually and in story. This beautifully illustrated paperback is recommended for zombie enthusiasts and developing zombie hunters. Check this one out for a harrowing story of a zombie apocalypse, set less than a year in the future!

Overall: 8.25 out of 10 (-1 for shortness, -.5 for not enough technical medical explanations of the infection, he is a doctor, no? -.25 for an open ended conclusion, which will hopefully be given treatment in a follow-up - well done overall).

Become a fan of this book for updates on a potential sequel:

Zombies: A Hunter's Guide and Your First Steps into a Zombie Apocalypse: A Book Review

Zombies: A Hunter's Guide by Joseph A. McCullough is an illustrated guide to dispatching the undead. Osprey Publishing released this survival guide in October of 2010 and the pages are beautifully illustrated by Mariusz Kozik, Ana Milnar, Charlie Adlard ("The Walking Dead"), Michael Maier and many other artists. This light read is made of eighty pages and broken down into classes of zombies e.g. "Atomic Zombies," "Viral Zombies." There is also a large section for aspiring zombie hunters called "Zombie Hunter Weapons" and "Zombie Hunter Tactics." This latest guide to the undead is an enjoyable read, but McCullough's entry into the genre feels overly light and the read is missing some depth. However, overall this guide is recommended for those just starting off in their own adventures of zombie hunting.

As mentioned above, this illustrated how-to is broken down first as a classification guide to zombies and there are eight different categories. This short novel begins with "Voodoo Zombies" and quickly moves onto "Nazi Zombies" and later "Zombie Masters." Each class is given attention as to their "Creation ," "Identification and Threat," and "Elimination and Prevention." Surpisingly, "Atomic Zombies" desires your pink jelly (brains), while "Viral Zombies" only want to infect you with their disease ridden bite. Also, weapons are given some detail in the closing pages, with the automatic shotgun, or the AA-12 your best bet for surviving zombie hordes. By the way, zombie hordes are considered to be groups of ten zombies or more by experienced "Zombie Hunters."

The element which stands out most for this authored graphic is the exceptional attention to the images found within. From black and white to full page strategy maps, there is good coverage in the visual display. However, other elements stand out less grandly.

Zombies: A Hunter's Guide seems sparse in actual depth of narration. Yes, this is fiction, but Max Brook's The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z offer some in-depth personal accounts of a looming zombie apocalypse. There are only a few examples of personal accounts within the pages and this reader was hoping for more. Yet, for burgeoning zombie hunters, this is a solid into' on the possible threats of the undead.

Basic weaponry, body armour and some tactics are explored to give "Containment Teams" the advantage. But untrained "Outbreak Survivors" are best kept inside to remove the possibility of "post-traumatic stress disorder" (64). This zombie lover would suggest that most "Outbreak Survivors" should don their best protective equipment and arm themselves with blunt weapons to protect themselves actively, rather than passively. Yet, the stories of survivors and the personal accounts of military battlers are forgotten for a slightly dry narrative.

In the end, Zombies: A Hunter's Guide offers a lot in its well-crafted eighty pages. The classification of the different forms of the undead is welcomed and the differing dispatch methods is a curious read. Consider this your intro' into the zombie apocalypse, while you should continue your research with Max Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z. Otherwise, you will find yourself as one of the undead, rather than a survivor.

Overall: 7.5 out of 10 (-1 for breadth, -1 for lack of personal accounts, -.5 on a heavily reliance on photos rather than words).
