The Walking Dead: Episode 1 Days Gone Bye and Solid Introductions: A Television Review

*Here be some spoilers.

Director: Frank Darabont.

Writer: Robert Kirkmann.

This is a review of the AMC's first episode of their original series "The Walking Dead." This episode is showing or has shown October 31st, depending on your time zone and this first episode was just over sixty minutes. Being introduced were Sheriff Rick Grimes along with Grime's best friend and law enforcement partner Shane. This was a mostly horrifying and sympathetic episode, but there were flaws. The use of the unbelievable shamblers and some questionable musical choices takes away some enjoyment from the viewing; however, if the series continues with the use of fast pacing, interesting characterizations along with twists and turns, then this will be one of the best television mini-series of the year!

A quick breakdown of the plot involves a shootout between local sheriffs and some escaping criminals. Then, the series moves ahead several weeks, with character and Sheriff Grimes waking up alone, in a deserted hospital. Here Grimes discovers that his life has changed, with his wife and child now missing. Luckily there are other survivors and Grimes finds a brief respite before heading up to the major metropolitan city, Atlanta, via horseback. The ending will not be revealed, but think multitudes of zombies versus one man.

One element that is amazing is how the AMC has made this project look like a big budget enterprise! There are hundreds of abandoned vehicles in some shots, entire highways are closed down and used, and the numbers of zombies in the show are incredibly numerous (some CGI enhancement). The acting from the main characters is on par with other mini-series and the characterizations are well developed. Grimes gets an in-depth back story, along with a fellow neighbour. Yet, some criticisms still persist.

A couple flaws involve some overly soft musical selections. Remember filmmakers, this is a zombie apocalypse, not a theatrical performance of the "The Nutcracker." The soundtrack could easily have used some rock and roll, or heavier musical choices. Also, using shamblers who walk 2 to 3 kms/hour is an odd choice, but we have been to this unbelievable place before. Finally, comparisons can be made between the opening of the favourite 28 Days Later and this production. Similarities include Grimes waking in an abandoned hospital after a coma, which is similar to Jim (Cillian Murphy) waking from a bike courier accident, in the aforementioned. Also, "God forgive us" is scrawled along one wall, much like on Jim's parent's suicide note. Grimes also finds himself in a deserted city, until his first exciting encounter with the undead. This is exactly how 28 Days Later also begins. Other comparisons can be made, but fans need to remember that Robert Kirkmann's comic debuted in 2003 - the same year as 28 Days Later.

Horror viewers are strongly encouraged to watch "Days Gone Bye" tonight, or whenever it is available, as this is quality television. Hopefully with the resurgence of fan interest in the undead, interesting television mini-series, like this series, will continue to be made. Those looking forward to the premiere can look at a new trailer for the entire first season of "The Walking Dead" below.

Overall: 7 out of 10 (-1 for music, -1 for shamblers, -1 for shortness)

Indie Horror Alert: Two Exclusive Stills from Jason Horton's Monsters in the Woods

Director Jason Horton is now in post-production on his creature feature Monsters in the Woods. The first trailer for the feature was posted (here) on Fangoria earlier this week. Now, Horton has passed on a couple exclusive photos from the shooting of the film. Actress Jacqui Holland is seen left as Suzi, with what appears to be a life-threatening branch impalement. A second photo is inside, which shows characters Kris (Paul Misko) and Ashley (Linda Bella) in an embrace. Horton says that he is working on the "actual cut this week" and that: "this is definitely the best material I've had to edit with" (Zapruter).

The film is a bloody satire on independent filmmaking and the challenges that directors go through to simply make a film. Even lower budget productions encounter fierce competition and pressure from studios to follow certain formulas. These elements are in Horton's tongue-in-cheek Monsters in the Woods. Have a read of an interview with Horton (here), as he talks about this project and check out the second photo just below.

The synopsis for the Monsters in the Woods feature is here:

"A low-budget film crew treks deep into the wilderness to shoot horror sequences for their unsellable indie-drama. They soon find themselves in the midst of their own horror show as they are hunted down real monsters" (Monsters).

Release Date: 2011 (Distro' Being Sought).

Director/writer: Jason Horton.

Producer: Robert Bravo.

Cast: Glenn Plummer, Lee Perkins, Linda Bella, Edward Hendershott, and Ashton Blanchard.

Saw 3D vs. the Marquis de Sade: A Movie Review

Saw 3D Japanese Poster
*This review has been written by fellow writer Ed Sum.

Director: Kevin Greutert.

Writers: Patrick Melton, and Marcus Dunstan.

If the Marquis de Sade can be thought of as a modern hero, he would give the traps encountered in the Saw franchise a nod of approval. With >Saw 3D, there could well be some reluctance because of the growing popularity of the format. That will depend if audiences want to sit through torture porn or get their wits scared out of them with this film's direct competitor - Paranormal Activity 2. For this Halloween weekend, there's also The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. It's the box office dollars that's at stake. But just like doling out the loot amongst children after Halloween, what gets shared is hardly even.

This time around, the latest bloody imaginings from the mind of director Kevin Greutert and writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan comes with mixed feelings. As far as this style of entertainment goes, at least the producers took the right step by filming this movie with proper 3D cameras. There's a few convincing moments as it juts out at audiences but it doesn't go far enough. What 3D films of today need to do is to consistently push the envelope. At least Saw 3D demonstrates some well toned depth in a dimly lit set, and the quick edits help make the trap sequences look reminiscent of the Spanish Inquisition. And the onus is on Bobby Dagon (Sean Patrick Flanery) to make things right.

He comes out of the woodwork to claim that he's survived Jigsaw's (Tobin Bell) traps. Just like the early films, there's a subplot too, where the law is on the trail of the killer. The suspense actually works this time because of the quick juxtaposition between the two stories. As things get tense, the tale switches gears and the action has viewers anticipating the next kill. And while these murders seem tame to one who's more used to Clive Barker's visceral images and H.R. Giger's darker fetishes, there's always going to be a teaser somewhere down the line.

-Fin

Ed Sum has started an online petition for Hollywood studios and 3D. The petition asks studios to disclose in trailers whether the film has been filmed in 2D and converted, or whether the film is true 3D (filmed with 3D cameras). The petition is here for you to sign:

Eight Short Films Reviews of Eight Short Zombie Themed Films from Zombie Feast

This is a brief overview of the Zombie Feast Horror Film Festival, which began last night (October 29th). Eight films were shown beginning at 5:00PM, with event organizer Ira Hunter hosting the event. At the festival was the one shot "The Rotten Truth," the politically incorrect "Night of the Living Dead...Mexicans," the Sasquatch rape oriented "Next of Kin," the hilarious "Kidz," the bongless "Bong of the Dead," the weed influenced "At the Reefer of Madness," the bizarre "Dog Gone Zombie," and finally the zombie stripper styled "Night of the Unwed." Below are a few thoughts on each of these eight short films.

"The Rotten Truth" 2 out of 4

This is a one take, one camera angle zombie film, which pokes fun at the undead. However, sometimes zombies poke back. This film was creative and the reel offered a nice, shocking finish.

"Night of the Living Dead...Mexicans" 3 out of 4

This reviewer would mark this a bronze winner compared to the other seven. The film pokes fun at Mexican immigrants and their desire for work: "I want your job!" The zombies come up with other great dialogue and this film is simply a lot of fun, while offering some satire.

"Next of Kin" 1 out of 4

"Next of Kin" is the first Sasquatchrape film that this reviewer has seen and here is one personal vote for no more. This film was shot in Whistler, B.C. and if you have a need to see a 2' foot Sasquatch penis amputated by a chainsaw, then this is the film for you. Extra credits go to the hairy Sasquatch bush (not the foliage) included in the reels, but the film is just too disturbing.

"Kidz" 3 out of 4

Any film that offers imagination and fantasy is generally welcomed by this film goer and "Kidz" puts three young superheroes first and foremost, in a zombie apocalypse. Events are not as they appear and the whole premise of this film was original and enjoyable.

"Bong of the Dead" 3 out of 4

This short film seemed to be a warm up for director Thomas Newman's feature of the same name. Yet, as organizer Hunter noticed, there are no bongs in the film. Instead, there is much Frankenstein-madness, which culminates in a satisfying end.

"At the Reefer of Madness" 3.5 out of 4

This film was the highlight for this zombie film lover and the inclusion of some stoned twenty-somethings kept watchers laughing. The premise of two stoners being motivated to murder for weed is very unbelievable, but still entertaining.

"Dog Gone Zombie" 1.5 out of 4

Not sure why a director would use a stuffed animal as a central killer, but there you go.

"Night of the Unwed" 3 out of 4

This was another excellent picture, which took place during a stag party gone wrong. Image if your stripped turned out to be a zombie stripper; in "Night of the Unwed," that is what you get.

This zombie themed film festival continues October 30 and 31st. The film festival's schedule can be found here:
