Aaah! Zombies!! and Blissful Ignorance: A Movie Review

Director: Matthew Kohnen.

Writers: Matthew Kohnen and Sean Kohnen.

Aaah! Zombies!! is a Wasted Pictures production from writers Matthew Kohnen and Sean Kohnen. The Los Angeles based Level 33 Entertainment is distributing this "rom-com" (Variety) onto DVD October 19th and this reviewer was laughing out loud at many of the silly, sometimes low-brow, gory jokes. The London Sci-fi Review says of this newest zombie comedy: "you'll laugh so hard, bits of you might just fall off," but much of the best humour comes from the bits falling off the undead characters. Ridiculous, charming, full of great one-liners, Aaah! Zombies!! met this reviewer's expectations for fun and excitement. This is one film whose infected needs spreading.

The film's premise is a little far-fetched, with the local Navy attempting to dump green goo from a failed super-soldier experiment into the local aquarium. You see, the Navy has a bone to pick with hippie protesters and anti-war zealouts and they attempt to toxify them with the remnants of their experiment. Fortunately the demonstrators are saved, but the local slackers get a taste of the ochre slime after a barrel of the stuff mistakenly pours out at their hangout and bowl-o-rama.

Here the film adds contrast with some scenes in black and white, while others are in colour. The colour scenes are from the point-of-view of the recently infected slackers and the black and white coloured reels are from the perspective of everyone else e.g. soldiers, bar patrons, bowlers.

This is where the comedy begins, as the zombie antics of the infected are over-the-top bizarre and often silly. Some characters have handle-bar impalements, but are still unaware of their undead condition. Others lose their entire scalp, but do not realize that this is unnatural and part of the rotting process. Still others drink brain flavoured maragaritas and do not get the picture, but you will and that is funny!

Ignorance is sometimes bliss and in this case ignorance is gut-wrenching hilarity: "Sean and Matthew Kohnen's tale of two twentysomething couples, oblivious to the fact they've turned into lurching freaks, is amusing and ingratiating" (Variety). The laughs continue through the entire ninety-six minute runtime, with a zombie run town the highlight of laughter.

Aaah! Zombies!!
has won the Audience Choice Award at Screamfest, the Best of the Fest at the Vision International Film Festival and the Best Comedy award at the Spirit Film Festival. Unique, upliftingly funny, smart, well-written and involving some very strange zombie romances, this film is in this reviewer's top five for films so far for 2010. Catch this one on DVD, or possibly through a limited release October 19thl all the info' on this rotting comedy are below.

Acting/believability/characterizations: 8 (dumbfoundedly well done).
Writing/plot/story: 7 (there is something too Braveheartish about the film's second half, but otherwise good).

Overall: 7.5 out of 10.

Red Princess Blues and Taming Wolves: A Short Film Review

Director/writer: Alex Ferrari.

The Red Princess Blues is a short film from The Enigma Factory, which is approximately ten minutes long. The short is meant as a promotional piece for a larger production and starring are Richard Tyson (The Fear Chamber), Tabithat Morella ("Two and a Half Men"), Rachel Grant (The Tournament) and narrator Robert Forster. Visually stunning, mature, and creating excitement through action sequences, the Red Princess Blues is like watching a darkly written fairy tale. To move towards a feature length film soon, this is a film to watch simply for the visual appeal.

The film begins along the lines of a "Little Red Riding Hood" story, where a young girl encounters a much larger and more worldly wolf in the form of a travelling carnie. Corrupted with shots of Bourbon and tales of sexual expectations, Little Red Riding Hood aka Zoe (Morella) gets bitten quickly. However, a lone woman intervenes (the Princess) and soon Rimo (Tyson), the local boozing carnie, is hurtling through the air, as deserved.

Red Princess Blues really follows along with a fairytale vibe and the heightened visuals give the piece a surreal, imaginative quality, which anchors it in this storytelling genre. Other reviews have commented on the visual style of the movie: "this film was breathtaking with its visual explosions of action" (Toothless). Yet this is not a child's movie, but one for adults. Many of the sexual situations are meant for an older viewership and the big bad wolf's defeat will be enjoyed more by an adult crowd.

Richard Tyson is suitable in his role of a predatory carnie and each of the characters are given enough time within the reels to develop some of their character. Morella is able to show youthful innocence and guilibility, while Grant, the protagonist, shows that some women are built tough as nails.

Available for download on the Ipad, Ipod, or at Itunes for .99, this is a film you want to see. The Red Princess Blues is evocative, thrilling, and the film offers a clear cut solution for one wolf whose appetite gets him into trouble, possibly for the last time. The film is a must see and here is some encouragement from this reviewer to director Ferrari for more film reels from this fantasy world.

Overall: 7.5 out of 10 (-1.5 for shortness, -1 for such a clear cut ending - positives already talked about).

Devil and Horrific Charm: A Movie Review

*This review has been written by Ed Sum.

Director: John Erik Dowdle.

Writers: Brian Nelson and M. Night Shyamalan.

Just how often have you heard the adage: the devil made me do it? Well, that is the idea M. Night Shyamalan may have been going for when he wrote the story to Devil. As the opening credits will reveal, it is going to be the first of the Night Chronicles trilogy, and where it goes from there better be just as mythic as Baz Lahmann's Red Curtain trilogy.

In each case, the film's plot is based on a well known story, like Romeo and Juliet or the Orphic myth (Moulin Rouge). The ending is not always pleasant. The events that unfold in Devil are perhaps Judgement Day for a few individuals. They arrive at an interesting crossroad in their life, but instead of an old Robert Johnson myth that folklorists are more familiar with, it's the Devil's meeting. Suddenly this concept becomes a sensation overnight ever since the movie became greenlit. In the film, it is marked with a suicide, the street number 333, and an elevator symbolic of one's ascent to a greater good or descent to damnation.

What Shyamalan has created has the scope of being something larger than life. And what is better than to challenge Old Nick himself? There are no crossroads here, but instead, there is a surreptitious elevator where more than just five individuals become trapped. But it's not just them where the film focuses on. With Detective Browden (Chris Messina) falling into the trap, there's actually six souls in question—just one number shy to opening a seventh seal. And just who the Antichrist will claim next is what keeps this film interesting!

If one decides to include the narrator, voiced by a very religious security guard Ramirez (Jacob Vargas), then the seal is actually broken. What comes raining out has a feel of a storm as it moves in over the city of Philadelphia. The only thing missing is the fire and brimstone. The film has a touch of the Shyamalan charm, but when he is not at the helm directing and revising the final script, the message the master storyteller delivers is still powerful enough to get some people talking. But when he's not at the creative helm, what is delivered by director John Erick Dowdle feels like a notch below the film's true potential. At least the story's flow is smooth as it transitions between what's happening in the elevator, at the monitoring station and the chaos ensuing outside.

The performances are decent enough to draw audiences into the cage, and the film is engrossing if one pays attention to Vargas. He tries to make sense out of everything that's happened. He's like a Jesuit faithful and concludes that the best stories laid out are those of hope before turning off the lights and hiding under the bed. Grandma never told stories like these before.
