A Theatrical Trailer for Yann Gozlan's French Film Captifs

A full theatrical trailer is available for director Yann Gozlan's (Echo) French language film Captifs. The trailer is entirely in French, but the dialogue seems to start with "the trip will take three hours" and the caption reads "Inspired from real events" (Captifs). The rest of the dialogue is just too fast for this reviewer. However, the clip does allude to organ harvesting for profit, as shown by the mysterious coolers and money changing hands. Interpretations aside, the film looks like a lot of fun for viewers, but less so for the captives.

A tagline for Caged here:

"They thought the war was over. But their nightmare was just beginning" (TF1).

A synopsis for Caged aka Captifs:

"Somewhere in Eastern Europe. Carole is a young nurse with a humanitarian aid group that has reached the end of its mission. But just then, the young woman and her two colleagues are kidnapped by strangers for mysterious reasons. Held captive, cared for and kept alive in an oppressive and sinister setting, the three prisoners soon discover with horror what their kidnappers truly have in store for them" (TF1).

Release Date: October 6th, 2010 (France Only, No Norte Americano Release Date Yet).

Director: Yann Gozlan.

The Dead Matter and Excellence: A Movie Review

Director: Edward Douglas.

Writers: Tony Demci and Edward Douglas.

The Dead Matter is a remake of a smaller film by director and writer Edward Douglas of the same name fifteen years previous (Fearnet). Midnight Syndicate Films and Precinct 13 Entertainment created this film through a joint production venture and The Dead Matter released on DVD July 30th. The DVD is jam-packed with special features from gag reels to music videos and the film stars Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead) with Andrew Divoff (The Rage). Totally enjoyable, this film blends a lot of genres to tell an interesting tale of witchcraft, possession and "post mortem Americans," aka zombies (Dead Matter); musical compositions also enhance the dark drama of the film.

The film interlaces a lot of sub-plots, but centrally The Dead Matter is about one devout sister's desire to speak with her dead brother. To achieve this goal a lot of friends are put in dire situations and Gretchen (Sean Serino), the sister, must face an ancient vampire named Vellich (Divoff). Many of these characters come together to square off on an ancient site, where the dead are brought back for a second shot at life.

There are many elements in the picture which are appealing including: the use of many classic movie characters e.g. vampires, vampire hunters, zombies, the inclusion of curses, a rich visual display, and clever scenes e.g. a vampire attack shown primarily through a mirror. The pacing is kept to a fast tempo, but the film does not feel rushed. The dramatic music is especially well done as rock music blends with electronica and classical. Midnight Syndicate Films started with musical compositions in film before moving to this first production and the transition is excellent: "Douglas and company [Midnight] managed to accomplish their goal of transforming Midnight Syndicate’s sense of spooky Halloween fun to a visual medium" (Fearnet). The list of quality elements continues and director Douglas shows his foundation in horror brilliantly in this first venture.

The critiques are minimal and simply include an underdeveloped plotline involving drug addicted vampires, a strange looking wig worn by Vellich, and a few scenes which are cut too short. Several minor vampires in the film use a weight loss drug to get high and this leads to their own destruction. Sadly, this plotline is given only a scene or two in a dark drug den. The grey wig worn by the central antagonist is simply over-the-top: "Divoff’s wig is a little too ‘80s hair-metal for my taste'" (Fearnet). Finally, several scenes are held to two minutes in length to add in a great deal of material and this can be a little frustrating. However, many comedic elements and nods to other films in the genre override these few negatives.

One of the best elements in The Dead Matter is the tragic ending, which leaves one of the central characters mortally wounded. The film seems to come full circle as a second female grieves the loss of an intimate. Yet, death in horror is not always a sure thing and the ending, while seemingly one scene short, begs the question: what happens next? The answer to this is up to the viewers, but here is one strong vote for more material from Douglas and his company Midnight Syndicate Films.

In closing, The Dead Matter offers a lot of footage in the film and in the DVD's bonuses. The details have really gone into the production and the result is extraordinary: "there is enough extras on hand to keep you busy for an entire weekend" (Fearnet). Available on DVD now, this reviewer encourages you to get your bloodlust fix in this well-written, well-orchestrated and comedic production.

Plot/story//treatment: 8 (-1 for some undeveloped sub-plots already mentioned, -1 for a slightly short conclusion).
Characters/characterizations: 7.5 (believable, -1.5 some stereotypes e.g. the strong jock/hero, the computer geek, -.5 for an overly happy character who is supposed to be grieving for her brother - Gretchen).

Overall: 7.75 out of 10 (well done).

Titanic II and Vanity: A Movie Review

Director/writer: Shane Van Dyke.

Titanic II is the most recent Asylum release with a DVD date of August 24th. The Asylum, as a production and distribution company, is a little hit and miss with this reviewer. Airline Disaster was good, but Transmorphers and The Terminators were less satisfying. Titanic II does not rise much higher than the latter. This film seems more of an ego project for director, writer, producer and actor Shane Van Dyke than anything else. Almost all objectivity is lost by Van Dyke as he appears in more than 75% of scenes as the world's second greatest martyr (Jesus Christ the first). As well, the use of green screens and CGIed objects really break the reality of a mediocre disaster film.

The premise is ridiculous, but in short a large ice shelf has sunk into the North Atlantic creating a mega-tsunami. This gianormous wave speeds along at "800 mph," (Dread) on a collision course with a newly launched luxury cruiseship dubiously titled the Titanic II. A hundred years after the original sunk, this second ship is doomed to "make history," (Titanic II) on its maiden voyage.

Cliches and melodrama aside, what really becomes apparent is director Van Dyke's deep love for himself and if you do not like him as much as he likes himself then you are not going to love this film much. Van Dyke's character, the millionaire Hayden Walsh, is a mechanical genius, lady's man, scuba diving expert, jet setter, and a budding biologist. Action in the film generally sets up further scenes for Van Dyke's character to the detriment of the other actors in the film. Some viewers will be bored with the constant instances of martyrdom.

There are a few positives in the feature as the action in the scenes creates some excitement and the performance of Bruce Davison (Apt Pupil) is adaptive to the material and thankfully understated. Also, watching several passengers on the Titanic II flop around like a group of beached seals after the iceberg hits is comical and noteworthy. The premise is interesting, but unbelievable and the project is ambitious in nature, which seemed to strain the budget of the picture. However, there are few flaws in the technical production and only one scene with noticeable ADR (audio dialogue replacement).

The use of CGI for helicopters and even the ship itself is well done; yet, the use of a green screen during some North Atlantic shots is unbelievably bad. These scenes are so obviously not taking place in the locale that they are representing that the effects really break the reality of the picture: "action and suspense are constantly hampered by the low budget and the special effects" (Dread). Some of the poor effects of the film are battling with Van Dyke for the most absurd award in the film. Van Dyke shows himself the champion after his momentous, sacrificial death in the final scene.

The Asylum's Titanic II sunk itself at the midway point when the film turned into a star vehicle, while some of the action threatens to make the film a lot of fun. Melodramatic, ambitious, and portraying actresses as no better than arm candy for the male stars, Titanic II is heading for the ocean's floor long before the iceberg hits.

Overall: 5.5 out of 10 (the film gets an automatic 5 out of 10 for not being primarily dubbed, keeping the lights and camera on - however the writing, acting, directing and other film elements mostly hamper the film - -2 for too many scenes involving Van Dyke, -1 for Van Dyke making himself look like the Golden Boy of cinema, -1 for green screen shots, -1 for a few overly dark shots, +.5 for Davison's performance).

Airline Disaster and Good Times Had: A Movie Review

Directed by: John J. Willis III.

Writter: Paul Sinor and Victoria Dadi.

Airline Disaster is one of The Asylum's latest releases and this production company is mostly known for its campier versions of Transformers or the Terminator (Transmorphers and The Terminators). They also have several sexier films. However, The Asylum leaves the camp behind in Airline Disaster and some of the sexiness with Lindsey McKeon only getting minimal scenes. Simply put, this film is an action packed ride through a terrorist ordeal with the camp of previous films replaced by some cheesiness in CGI effects and tense drama.

In short, several Neo-Nazi hijackers take over the Starquest, a state of the art, automatically flown airplane. These terrorists want ten of their friends released from the New Jersey State Penitentiary, or else the plane's captain and brother of the the President of the United States is going to be murdered. The passengers on the plane are also in jeopardy. Add in a few laser beams, missiles, and lots of gunfire then Airline Disaster turns into a fairly solid action thriller.

Released on DVD June 29th, Airline Disaster has been described as the following: "if you put some effort into it you might find some enjoyment" in the film (Armstead, FCU). The film does have a lot of inconsistencies e.g. stealth fighters exploding from fuel leaks, lasers going wild and blowing up city blocks. Yet, the film's pacing is well-done, with the action consistent. Basically there is almost always something going on and most film fans will find some excitement in this Asylum effort. As well, the performances are good, with the leader of the hostage takers, Robert Stevens (Geoff Meed) appropriately evil; Meredith Baxter ("Family Ties") also makes a solid appearance as a distressed president.

This film is not going to break any DVD records, but The Asylum seems to be rolling up their sleeves in order to bring or at least attempt to bring tense drama. There seems to be a transition happening here from over-the-top, unbelievable productions to more tightly written thrillers. Titanic II is a second film from The Asylum, which releases on DVD August 24th, that is attempting to bring a little reality to the table. This is a nice change as a little believability goes a long way to making a film enjoyable.

Already distributed last month, fans of thrillers might find something worth seeing in Airline Disaster. Not overly challenging in the material nor very thought provoking once the credits role, the film is still a fun watch. The CGIed destruction of multiple airplanes is just the ridiculously sweet icing on the cake.

Overall: 6 out of 10 (-1 for not explaining one villain's demise, -1 for too much CGI, -1 for not enough Lindsey McKeon, -1 for repetitive music).

"Join filmmaker C.W. Prather as he takes TV lovers on a nostalgic trip back to when horror hosts haunted the UHF dial and regional television held a treasure trove of localized surprises. For generations of Washingtonians, the name Dick Dyszel will forever be synonymous with three names: Bozo the Clown, Captain 20, and Count Gore De Vol. Through the 1970s and '80s, Dyszel's colorful television characters entertained adults and children alike. Later, when the millennium was about to turn and skeptics cited horror hosts as a relic of the past, Dyszel revolutionized the concept of on-demand entertainment by launching "Creature Feature: The Weekly Web Program" (BestBuy).
