Aaah! Zombies!! and Blissful Ignorance: A Movie Review

Director: Matthew Kohnen.

Writers: Matthew Kohnen and Sean Kohnen.

Aaah! Zombies!! is a Wasted Pictures production from writers Matthew Kohnen and Sean Kohnen. The Los Angeles based Level 33 Entertainment is distributing this "rom-com" (Variety) onto DVD October 19th and this reviewer was laughing out loud at many of the silly, sometimes low-brow, gory jokes. The London Sci-fi Review says of this newest zombie comedy: "you'll laugh so hard, bits of you might just fall off," but much of the best humour comes from the bits falling off the undead characters. Ridiculous, charming, full of great one-liners, Aaah! Zombies!! met this reviewer's expectations for fun and excitement. This is one film whose infected needs spreading.

The film's premise is a little far-fetched, with the local Navy attempting to dump green goo from a failed super-soldier experiment into the local aquarium. You see, the Navy has a bone to pick with hippie protesters and anti-war zealouts and they attempt to toxify them with the remnants of their experiment. Fortunately the demonstrators are saved, but the local slackers get a taste of the ochre slime after a barrel of the stuff mistakenly pours out at their hangout and bowl-o-rama.

Here the film adds contrast with some scenes in black and white, while others are in colour. The colour scenes are from the point-of-view of the recently infected slackers and the black and white coloured reels are from the perspective of everyone else e.g. soldiers, bar patrons, bowlers.

This is where the comedy begins, as the zombie antics of the infected are over-the-top bizarre and often silly. Some characters have handle-bar impalements, but are still unaware of their undead condition. Others lose their entire scalp, but do not realize that this is unnatural and part of the rotting process. Still others drink brain flavoured maragaritas and do not get the picture, but you will and that is funny!

Ignorance is sometimes bliss and in this case ignorance is gut-wrenching hilarity: "Sean and Matthew Kohnen's tale of two twentysomething couples, oblivious to the fact they've turned into lurching freaks, is amusing and ingratiating" (Variety). The laughs continue through the entire ninety-six minute runtime, with a zombie run town the highlight of laughter.

Aaah! Zombies!!
has won the Audience Choice Award at Screamfest, the Best of the Fest at the Vision International Film Festival and the Best Comedy award at the Spirit Film Festival. Unique, upliftingly funny, smart, well-written and involving some very strange zombie romances, this film is in this reviewer's top five for films so far for 2010. Catch this one on DVD, or possibly through a limited release October 19thl all the info' on this rotting comedy are below.

Acting/believability/characterizations: 8 (dumbfoundedly well done).
Writing/plot/story: 7 (there is something too Braveheartish about the film's second half, but otherwise good).

Overall: 7.5 out of 10.
