Dark Horse and Beating Dark Odds: A Short Film Review

Director: Marc Furmie.

Writers: Marc Furmie and Ji Hao Lou.

Dark Horse is a dramatic short from director and writer Marc Furmie, which has won several awards at various film festivals including Best Short Film at the 2010 Byron International Film Festival. The most famous English writer William Shakespeare believed that drama was the most effective genre to emote in audiences and Dark Horse is an example of why. The film offers brilliant performances, a positive message about doing for others, and an opportunity for viewers to look inside themselves for their own positive message.

In the story, Dark Horse follows a part time prostitute named Isabella Fortino (Alin Sumarwata) through a dark night of involuntary debauchery brought on by her drug addicted boyfriend. A random taxi driver intervenes in her life, briefly, to show her that each of us can make better choices. The taxi driver played by Wanh Shuli is doing his best to grieve a recent miscarriage experienced by his young wife. The deep and serious tone of the twenty-eight minute film reflects the difficult reality of everyday life.

The character Tran offers support to Fortino by returning her phone and getting her out of a negative lifestyle by just listening. The positive message is that people are put on this earth to help each other and not only to help themselves. This message comes through strongest when Fortino walks away from her abusive boyfriend in the final scene.

The film also takes on challenging material and finds some meaning, but the film is also asking viewers to find some meaning in the material and in dark places. Partially financed by the New South Wales Film and Television Office, Dark Horse will continue to challenge audiences at various film festivals, as events are announced. Have a look at the film's website for further details.

Overall 8.5 out of 10 (-1 for such disturbing subject matter, hard to watch at times, -.5 for not delving a little more deeply in to Tran's relationship with his wife).
