Is There a Need for a Chain Letter Movie?

Why do film studios i.e. Deon Taylor Studios choose to make a movie based off of the latest technological device, or latest fad i.e. chain letter, text messaging? Does this kind of film have staying power? No one remembers the film Text, or the television series Voicemail, but here we have another gimmicky titled film called Chain Letter. Maybe director Deon Taylor (7eventy 5ive) can spark something imaginative in Chain Letter. Yet, the title and synopsis says shallow drivel, despite Taylor's somewhat excellent track record (Night Tales, The Hustle). This is only an opinion, as the film has not been reviewed here, or seen. However, to really excite a viewers' fears look at the mythology that children are raised on i.e. Hansel and Gretel (cannibalism, infanticide), Little Red Riding Hood (attempted murder, mutilation) and others. Have chain letters and a connection to fear sunk deep enough into the collective unconscious to warrant a film on the subject? The answer here is a definite no, but anyone who sees the film and has a differing opinion is encouraged to post it here.

The synopsis for Chain Letter here:

"Six friends receive a mysterious chain letter via text messaging and in their email accounts from a maniac who's hunting down teenagers who fail to forward his online chain letter. Who knew they should take the threats in the chain letter seriously? Or that chain letters using the teens' favorite technologies to track them can kill? This maniacal game pits friend against friend as they race to beat rules that seem impossible to escape. Break the chain, lose a life. Do you pass it on? Does friendship mean anything" (IMDB)?

Release Date: May 21, 2010 (Limited).

Director: Deon Taylor.

Writers: Deon Taylor, Diana Erwin, and Michael J. Pagan.

Cast: Nikki Reed, Noah Segan, Keith David, Betsy Russell, Michael Bailey Smith, Matthew Cohen, Cody Kasch, Michael J. Pagan. Cherilyn Wilson, and Clifton Powell.

Why is Chain Letter going to be good? You have not made a convincing argument. To say something is "good" is not enough. -Mike

This is not an argument whether or not the movie will be 'good' or not, as I leave comment for conclusion, but I do have this to add:

The movie intrigues me in several aspects. First, Michael B. Smith who plays the villain got injured on set while lifting a real person and throwing them, tore a muscle, and continued to film, unknowning to the staff. That's determination.

The movie displays the talent of Brad Dourif who is a longstanding hero of mine in respects to playing very mysterious and difficult-to-execute characters. His participation in various other horror films always brought something exciting to the movie.

It has been talked about the deaths employed in this film are 'creative'. Personally enjoying the aspects of sadism in villains (or heroes) in horror films, the idea of death being a creative force driving the unusual filming of mortality's conclusion brings me an interest to view anything that claims to defy the entertainment industry's standards.

But that's not a ploy for this movie to be good, perhaps only enough to raise an eyebrow. Like I said before, we can critique the hell out of it once it hits theaters.

I am a fan of Brad Dourif, as well. I am not familiar with Michael B. Smith. Although, I have seen "The Hills Have Eyes."

Death is fascinating and if the film is creative rather than the usual, I will keep my ears peeled. Good to see that Deon Taylor's film will reach theaters. A wider showing means a wider audience. In the end fans of the genre will decide if Chain Letter has a lasting affect/effect.

Leave it to these indie film companies to surprise you. They're not bound by a large expecting audience, therefore they will defy norms to thrill audiences. I've got my eye on a lot more independent film companies these days. The technology to make a visually appealing movie is commonplace, now it's more a matter of grabbing the viewer's attention and keeping it through plot, character development, and good ol' synchronized dying!

Very well done website by the way. Enjoy it greatly!
