A Kiss from Calcutta and Intrigue: A Movie Review

Director: Christopher Drews.

Writer: Jacob Gentry.

Kiss From Calcutta is a thirty-two minute short from director Christopher Drews and writer Jacob Gentry. A darkly themed film Kiss is suspenseful, but also frustrating as some of the film is left unexplained, all the way to the end. The excellent visual imagery and an interesting story make the film recommendable, but a little more time could have been spent developing the characters, and storyline.

The film is centrally a tragic love story between characters Pete (Jacob Gentry), and Ashley (Kym Jackson). However, Ashley is an assassin and Pete is a coke addict; so, this is a relationship in trouble from the get-go. Add in a greater criminal element, and things quickly deteriorate between these two flawed and desperate human beings. But what about the unexplained elements in the film?

Pete's friend Chestor is killed by Ashley and viewers will ask: "why?" Yet, the questions do not end there: why is there a body in a bathtub, why are there a group of shady businessmen after Pete, and why the tragic ending? The questions continue, but one of the most important questions is answered. Why does Ashley falls for Pete? Simply put, Ashely is lonely.

The film is acted fairly well and the director shows an interesting visual palette. The best shot of the film is a long distance overview of a beach with Pete below looking contemplatively at the ocean. The directing techniques keep the visual sphere changing, with grainy shots to shaky camera angles. As well, Kym Jackson is understated in her role, while Jacob seems more suited to writing than acting. Other minor characters come off believably and enhance the film, rather than distracting from the flow of the story.

A time well spent Kiss from Calcutta can be watched a couple times to demystify some of the intrigue from the film. As well, the film can be interpreted a few different ways, and the film is a joy to watch, overall.

Characters/interaction/believability: 6.5.
Plot/story/unity/overall structure: 7.75.
Directing/coaching/staging of action: 7.5.

Overall: 7.25 questions answered out of 10.

Excision to Save a Life: A Short Film Review

Director: Richard Bates Jr.

Writer: Richard Bates Jr.

Would you take a life to save the life of someone you love? This is the central moral dilemma that Pauline (Tessa Ferrer) faces, as her sister Grace (Carly Hobson) slowly succumbs to cystic fibrosis. A horror short that clocks in at eighteen minutes, it is no surprise why Excision has won at least twenty-four awards.

An excellent performance from Tessa Ferrer and the other minor characters, the story, execution, and denouement (conclusion) of Excision are near flawless. Currently in the film festival circuit Excision must be seen by horror fans! Check out the website of the film for film festival screenings, often!

Acting/believability/characterizations: 7.5.
Story/writing/plot: 8.
Conclusion/editing/continuity: 8.

Nine Dead New Poster and Plot Summary

A new poster has arrived as Nine Dead moves towards a release date. Also, a full synopsis and trailer are available from the Fabrication Films website (distributors). To show at the American Film Market November 6 Nine Dead will then be released on DVD early in January 2010. Check out the plot summary from Chris Shadley's Nine Dead below and visit the Fabrication Films website for more info'.

A plot summary for Nine Dead here:

"A masked gunman is on the prowl, kidnapping seemingly random victims without hesitation or remorse. First, a Vegas club owner, then a Hollywood actor and then a Los Angeles District Attorney; all taken in the blink of an eye with expert precision.

The police are helpless and baffled by the kidnapper's motive even as one of their own detectives falls victim to the one-man crime-wave. The true number of kidnapped victims and the assailant's motive comes to a haunting reality when these nine strangers find themselves handcuffed to nine separate poles in a bunker built by the masked gunman who is hell bent on revenge. But the gun in his hand and the threat of death are just tools in his forced act of attrition.

If the Gunman is going to succeed, he needs someone to live. "I have brought the nine of you here for a reason. Your survival depends on you figuring out what that reason is. I will leave you alone for you discussions but i will return over ten minutes and kill one of you until you figure out why I have brought you here, or until you are all dead." And with his single deadly statement, the gunman closes the bunker door, leaving the nine stranger scared, desperate and unsure of who will be the first one killed or if any will live.

They confess their worst crimes, sins and innermost fears hoping to find the connection that will keep them alive. As each ten-minute period expires, the gunman re-enters the bunker and asks his one simple question. "Why are you here?" If they don't have every piece of his twisted puzzle a single gunshot kills one of the nine resetting the clock giving survivors another chance to uncover the gunman's truth. Criminals, everyday citizens, a cop, a lawyer and a priest have all been extracted from their lives and thrust into a world of betrayal, deceit and murder. Unsure who to trust and what to believe, the nine must rely on each other before the clock on the next victims life runs down to zero.

Can their differences and prejudices be put asides? Will the answers come out? Who of the nine live and who dies? Only time will tell. You have ten minutes."

Release Date: November 6, 2009 (Limited Release)

Director: Chris Shadley.

Writer: Patrick Wehe Mahoney.

Cast: Melissa Joan Hart, John Terry, and Chris Bent.

iMurders and Confusion: A Movie Review

Director: Robbie Bryan.

Writer: Robbie Bryan, and Ken Del Vecchio.

Have you ever heard that saying: "if you have nothing good to say then don't say anything at all?" Well, if this reviewer followed this motto then we would not have an insightful review of iMurders, a limited released film that is now available on DVD as of October 14. Also, a film that weaves far too many plot devices in a short ninety-eight minute run time, while commenting on the anonymity of the internet iMurders is just passable as a horror feature. Can the actors save this sinking script? Let us have a look.

Warning: only brief attention will be given to the plot as touching on all the plot devices would easily fill a page and a half. Let us say that a cheating husband kicks off a revenge plot with several innocent members of a Facespace chat room being offed by a strangely masked villain. A love story develops between apartment residents Joe Romano (Frank Grillo) and Sandra Wilson (Terri Colombino), two of the only seemingly virtuous characters in the film. While several minor subplots involving a corrupt lawyer, a lonely landlord, a lesbian love triangle, and a woman coping with an assault are only slightly fleshed out and they are confusing (this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as sub-plots go)! The film is centrally a murder mystery that revolves around the previously mentioned members of a horror themed chat room. If you watch the film, just focus on these characters as most of the sub-plots are a distraction.

The story is not really helped by an all star cast including scream queen Brooke Lewis, Tony Todd (Candyman), and Bill Dee Williams each of whom seem confused in their parts. Viewers are likely to feel the same way. Kudos go to Frank Grillo who seems confident in his role as an ex-police officer and Brooke Lewis, who despite an obvious eye injury plays a dual of role of intensity and gentleness. Also, standing out is Terri Colombino, as Sandra Wilson who plays an innocent woman in the initial portion of the film. But each of these actors cannot save this ship that seems to be sailing in heavy fog.

A film that is for those who love complex murder mysteries, iMurders is just passable as a horror feature, as the blood and gore are minimal and the writing is overly confusing. A feature that could have easily trimmed half its cast and plot elements, iMurders could be enjoyed only if you check your brain at the door and enjoy the sparkly lights.

Acting/believability/characterizations: 6.
Writing/story/context: 5.
Scene changes/continuity/editing: 5.5.
Setting/environments/props/use of characters in space: 6.

Overall: 5.6 cross-eyed eyes out of 10.

Season of the Witch Details and Release Date

A mythical tale of witchcraft and sorcery Season of the Witch will see theatres in the New Year (March 19). A priest (Stephen Campbell Moore), a grieving knight (Ulrich Thomsen), an itinerant swindler (Stephen Graham), and a headstrong youth who can only dream of becoming a knight (Robert Sheehan) join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl.

The Wolfman Confirms February 12 in Theatres!

It seems to me like this film has been coming out for about a year, but now finally the Wolfman trailer is available for show with a release date along side. To star Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro, and Emily Blunt the Wolfman will get a wide release through Universal Pictures this upcoming February 12th. Check out an in-depth plot summary along with a beautiful rendered trailer inside!

Lawrence Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate.

As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. The Bleeding with an Official Release Date

The Bleeding, which comes out next month looks like a B-movie from the past with Vinnie Jones donning the vampire make-up and Michael Madsen the priest outfit. Not likely to make too many theatres in three weeks The Bleeding will nonetheless be released this November 10 with Armand Assante, DMX, Rachelle Leah and others starring in a vampire apocalypse. Is the film just a paycheck, or something more? It is too hard to answer this question at this point, but the trailer is just passable as the narration fades in and out while the best parts of The Road Warrior are replayed onscreen. But stay tuned for more info' as it is too soon to tell whether The Bleeding is a wolf in sheeps clothing, or a disasterpiece waiting to happen.

Release: November 10, 2009.

Director: Charlie Picerni.

Writer: Lance Lane.

Cast: Vinnie Jones, Michael Madsen, Armand Assante, DMX, William McNamara, Krista Ayne, and Rachelle Leah.

Before the Fall on Video

Another film that will be screening at the Screamfest '09 Film Festival is Before the Fall a film about the forthcoming asteroid apocalypse. The film sounds slightly pessimistic about mans' future, but the trailer is interesting enough to watch despite an English monologue drowning out the excitement on display. To show this Saturday October 24 at 7:00pm Before the Fall looks like a good bet to purchase a ticket for if you are lucky to live in the heart of Los Angeles or anywhere near Grauman's Chinese Theater. For those of us (un)fortunate enough not to live near the L.A. hub then you and I will have to wait for a future DVD release date while enjoying this full trailer from IFC films and director F. Javier Gutierrez. Check out the trailer below and prepare to have your eyes seared as comets streak across the screen!

A synopsis for the film courtesy of traileraddict.com:

"What would you do if the world was going to end in 72 hours? A giant meteorite is about to collide with Earth. The planet is gripped by despair and chaos. The inhabitants of the little town of Laguna listen to the news in terror. Ale, a frustrated young man who lives with his mother and works doing odd jobs decides to spend his last days shut away, getting drunk, and listening to his favorite music. But his plans change when he is forced to help his mother, Rosa, to protect his brother Tomas' four children when Lucio, an ambiguous, disturbing stranger appears."

Release: Already released with a limited run on October 24 (DVD release for N. America still to be announced).

Director: F. Javier Gutiérrez.

The Quiet Arrangement: A Movie Review

Director: David C. Snyder.

Writer: David C. Snyder.

It is sometimes difficult to review a film that took three attempts to finish, but occasionally there will be a nugget of gold if mined so let us take a look this 2009 release from director David C. Snyder called "The Quiet Arrangement." A film that is full of poor actors, little music, and without a consistent unifying theme each makes the film almost unwatchable while the clever use of the crime drama genre with the development of some interesting plot twists are the advantages of watching this film from beginning to end.

The film does seem to revolve around the hostage taking of an older man's young wife. However, the central character from the initial portion of the film is quickly killed and the movie seems to start again with another character. This changing of characters happens again and the film is hard to follow, but involves police detectives, drug dealers and other similar miscreants who are looking to make money from the ransom of Mrs. Briggs.

One of the positives of "The Quiet Arrangement" could be the unconventional plot unravelment, but the poor acting, lack of music, and indistinguishable story take away from the enjoyment of the film. Characters are introduced only to be killed quickly and the lack of character development will leave most viewers thinking "who cares?" All of these poor qualities make the film a hard watch so this review will be wrapped up here and serve as a warning to anyone about to watch the film.

Only the second film from David C. Snyder this director is still finding his way in the movie world and "The Quiet Arrangement" is more of an experiment than a well managed movie. So, while "The Quiet Arrangement" could serve film students on some level of what not to do the film as a piece of entertainment will not serve many. Keep trying David.

Acting/believablity/characterizations: 4.
Writing/story/plot/: 4.5.
Continuity/pacing/editing: 5.5.

Why the Secrecy Behind Basement Jack?

After several requests to review writer Brian O'Toole's horror thriller Basement Jack the mail slot is empty and a DVD release is coming up very soon; so why would a writer or a studio not want a review of their film? Sometimes a studio like Island Gateway Films will not make a movie open to the reviewing public if they have a bad film on their hands. So, without seeing the film how would I know if the film is of poor quality? Another clue to the value of Basement Jack is that the DVD premiere is in Germany with a straight to DVD format also signalling that this film has at the very least low production values (low budget). While many films with low production values are still able to come across as entertaining, i.e. How to be a Serial Killer generally a film with a low budget will be of poor quality with a high-quality independent film the exception and not the rule. I have seen a lot of independent films and I know first-hand this statement to be true!

Therefore, fans need to be a little wary of purchasing Basement Jack. It would probably be best for fans to wait until several reviews of the film have come in and to also wait until well into the release date of the DVD to make sure that the film is worth buying and watching for yourself as most of the evidence thus far points to this Island Gateway production as being of poor quality and not worth seeing.

How to be a Serial Killer: A Movie Review

Director: Luke Ricci.

Writer: Luke Ricci.

Already released through a limited run last summer How to be a Serial Killer is a 2009 DVD October release that blends comedy, some horror, and solid writing to show the life of a serial killer over the course of several days. Really a spoof of infomercials How to be a Serial Killer from writer, and director, Luke Ricci is a fun watch despite some limiting production values (low budget). A great addition to horror genre How to be a Serial Killer is a Netflix must for those wanting something off the beaten path.

The film centers around Mike played by Dameon Clarke and Matthew Gray Gubler as Bart who form a dysfunctional, symbiotic relationship as they terrorize the unfortunate folks of Santa Clarita, California. Shot documentary style the film shifts back and forth between Mike the seminar leader and the and often funny actions of Bart. HTBASK is really a buddy movie in the guise of a thriller piece so prepare to some over-the-top action scenes involving murder with some great comedic exchanges.

Well written by Luke Ricci the storyline simply unfolds as a fun film to watch more than once. The charismatic appeal of Mike and the bumbling of Bart together create a foil for each other, but add contrast to an already comedic film (just check out the 70s elevator music throughout). A shootout in the back of an apartment complex is bizarre as characters step into frame briefly only to be tracked down by Mike and bludgeoned in their own homes. This is one of the comedics highlights from the film and there are more, but some of the disadvantages of shooting on a limited budget means that the amount of minor characters in the film are sparse and there is a heavy reliance on closed sets to keep shooting simple.

HTBASK is like a stop at a stand up act with Dane Cook confidently spouting off lines about how to improve your killing and how to live your life more confidently. A great film and a lot of fun to watch HTBASK can be picked up to own this October 13, 2009 and definitely don't pass this one by as it is like briefly looking into a serial killer's brain with a microscope so don't miss it!

Continuity/directing/editing: 8.5.
Writing/plot/story/logic: 7.5.
Characters/action/interacion: 8.5.
Overall: 8.25 Funny Bones out of 10.

Pandorum: A Movie Review

Director: Christian Alvert.

Writer: Travis Milloy.

Pandorum from director Christian Alvert and writer Travis Milloy is a 2009 sci-fi thriller that takes place in the heart of the unknown and the picture is a solid action and character study both rolled in one. The actor's performances are on key in intensity and first hour of film does not take the edge off as mysterious creatures dart in and out of scenes. A suitable film for those with an ache for a heartattack, or those interested in a well written story Pandorum will satisfy those fans looking for something exciting!

Pandorum begins with a back story of how the earth becomes overpopulated, experiences famine, and water shortages, then the film moves ahead to focus on the characters Bower (Ben Foster), and Payton (Dennis Quaid) Both Bower and Payton look to solve a power supply problem on a ship that is the last hope for mankind. Right from the get go when Bower is released from his hyper-sleep pod the excitement begins as he twists his way through dark tunnels that look like something out of a nightmare only to find most of the crew from the ship dead, or slightly changed. Bower then fights for his life for most of the remainder of the film while gathering a motley crew of survivors as he attempts to recharge an aging reactor, which is about to meltdown.

High in intensity and solid in action some minor characters are introduced in Pandorum at the mid way mark, but the film is centrally focused on the lead characters Payton and Bower, who both have troubled pasts. Rather than give away too much from the antagonists, of which there are more than one, or from the plot let us just say that there are a few nice twists in the film. So, of course there are some great action scenes as Manh played by Cung Le displays martial art skills along with Antje Traue as character Nadia. As well, there is some recognition on the part of Bower about who he truly is after losing most of his identity to hyper-sleep, which makes the film interesting on a couple of levels as the film develops the story.

One of the greater enjoyments of the film is the intensity that builds from the beginning of the film all the way to the end with a climax that will leave most viewers surprised. Truly the film is like something out of one's worst nightmare as most of the initial action takes place in the dark; as well, things seem to take an even nastier turn as some of the characters turn on each other for survival. A dramatic plot that unfolds as a sharp knife does when it is unsheathed Pandorum will keep most viewer's on edge as the film shows little regard for those weak of heart.

Still in theatres and hosting some of the strongest actors and creators in the biz' Pandorum is a must see by those with an interest in the sci-fi, horror, thriller, or dramatic genres. A remarkable film with some well-written intense action scenes Pandorum must be seen by anyone with a love for creative visuals and unique storylines. Don't miss your opportnity to see this in the theatres!

Acting/believability/persona: 7.5.
Story/writing/plot development: 8.
Theme/tone/pacing/structure: 7.75.
Overall: 7.75 Screaming Banshees from Hell out of 10!
